Kenwood Model Nine G

This is a Kenwood Trio Model Nine G. I bought it Friday when I was supposed to be looking for a desk. It's got some serious sounds, and I like the display. I just passed along a Sansui 8000 G that was probably a more serious piece of equipment, but this looks better to me and is not without its charms. Seems similar in size, power, and features. I hooked it up to some Heresy speakers, played some Dead through them, and I like it alright! Makes the Heresy's sound as good as they ever have.

That beats a desk any day!

I just saw a Kenwood 11 GX over the weekend. Similar style to what you have shown but the faceplate was more of a greyish color IIRC. Looked like a real monster with every bell and whistle. Are these good receivers ?

These are real good receivers. Take it and you will be happy with it. Great Tuner section, fine Phono.
I have a few of these models and I really love them beside my Sansuis...

There's a number of variations to the Kenwood 9, 10 and 11's. The 9's and 10's only have knobs, whereas depending on which Model 11, it either has knobs or eq sliders.

One bit that's often asked about is what's the difference between a G and a GX - in looking at 2 side by side (an Eleven G and GX), the only difference a friend and I could come up with was that the G has a solid wood case, while the GX has a veneered wood case - that seems to be the same for all variations of the G vs. the GX. Both the G and GX were only offered through military exchange.

The all have a classic Kenwood styling - same dial face as the KR-x600 line. The tuners on these are quite good as well. At any given time, there are often multiple variations available on eBay - though if you're looking for a specific model, you may have to bide your time a little. The gunmetal versions are certainly rarer, with the 9000's being the ones I've seen least. I love just about all of these models, though my favorite is my KR-9000GX that's pictured at the end of this post.

Not sure if you wanted all that info or not, but I get pretty stoked about this line of Kenwoods.

If anyone has manuals for any of the units not already in the AKdatabase, certainly scan/email them in!

And here's a size comparison with my Sansui G-9000.

The KR-9000GX is slightly bigger even without the case, but the Sansui is at least 10 lbs heavier.

Those are beautiful -I have a G-8000 and a KR-9400 but that is one great looking Kenwood!!

You can't go wrong with any of these. I own several of these Kenny's.

Model Nine G x2
Model Nine GX
Model KR-9000 G x2 (one is a parts unit)
Model KR-10000III
And my latest addition thats in the mail a Model Eleven G

I love these things (my family and neighbors hate 'em)!! Some have issues, one of the Nine G's one of the power meters reads higher than the other. The Nine GX arrived fubared and I have never gotten it fixed. The timer coupler on the KR-10000III is busted.

There are differences between the G's and the GX's. The cases are one, the way they mount and the vents. They both look veneered but the G's look like the structure wood is different.

There is some difference in inside wiring wise too. My GX has some green wires on the power amp/supply board that the G does not. What they are for I have no idea, I was gonna switch boards out of the parts KR-9000 G into the GX but assumed because of the extra wires it was not quite the same. The sevice manual makes no referance to the GX models.

Model Eleven G's and GX's are quite different than the 10000III and Model Eleven I, II and III's.

I think the G's (and GX's I assume as specs are the same) sound better. The harmonic distortion level is quite a bit cleaner. 0.03% compared to 0.1% for the other Elevens and KR-10000's. A strange note is The Eleven G's are rated at 120 WPC @ 8 ohm and 130 WPC @ 4 ohm. But the Nine G is 80 WPC @ 8 ohm but 110 WPC @ 4 ohm (20 more than the jump on the Eleven). Wonder why?? Anyone that owns these things know these numbers are a little under rated. I had one Nine G measured at 93 WPC at 8 ohm and a stunning 124 WPC @ 4 ohm.

By chance does anyone know where to get replacement pointer lamps (function lamps)?? I know they are 8v 0.05A. I don't want to go led. Also where I might find a timer coupler for the KR-10000?? E-Bay has been a flop.

This is great to know - I wondered if anything would look different if I had been able to see them open side by side, but didn't have the time to do so - so was only going by external appearances. I wonder what those wires do in the GX that isn't needed or is wired differently in the G.

I have done all my Kenwood relamping through AK'er dgwojo. PM him - he's got everything you'll need, prices are good, and he's quick.

Wish I could be any help on the timer, but I can't.

There are several threads about the timers and different ways to fix or just bypass it alltogether.

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=359810

The above thread shows how a member used some brass tubing to fix the timer, with a picture.

There is another thread which a member just jumped the timer to bypass it. In this fix, the timer cant be used, but the receiver will power on and off.

Use the search menu up above to find more info. Just type in the Google AK tab, Kenwood timer, and many threads and posts to choose from. Good luck with your Kenwood. I have the Nine G myself, and fortunately, my timer works fine...

Long time Kenwood fan. Have a Eleven III that has been a joy to listen to and nice to look at too. Noticed that no mention of the different black face versions of the models written about. Some of those are very stunning lookers.

Have you heard of an early version of the Eleven G that featured knobs instead of sliders ?
