Sherwood s5500II

Hi everyone.

Yetserday I picked up a Sherwood S5500II and s2100II tuner for $240. The guy I got them from never fired it up as he had heard something about not doing that on old tube gear. I have been searching the webs for a manual and/or a schematic but haven't had much luck. I gave it a quick cleaning last night and aside from a little bit of rust on the chassis it looks to be in great shape. The case and faceplate are almost perfect. I have seen pics of these before, but in person the face plates look like white porcelain and the case is wrapped in leather. Cool.

I was able to get a ll the cap values written down, but was hoping to find a manual fo everything else. Would anyone happen to have a manual/schematic for this? I was completely confused by the speaker hook ups. Luckily I found the info on that. I decided to be brave last night and fire it up after inspecting all the components. It came up and started playing music, although there was a little hum going on. Hopefully that will be fixed with new caps. I'm going to get the tubes tested tonight. There are 3 Telefunken 12ax7's, 2 Siemens 12ax7's and four 7868's. I hope they all test good.

I haven't gotten to the tuner yet. That looks to be in pretty good shape as well. I'll post some pics later.

Anyone have a schematic or manual for this unit?

Thanks

Can not give you a hand but, you just bought yourself a very good system for more than a very reasonable price. Well worth going through them to make sure they are in spec.

I have also acquired some Sherwood tube gear and came up against the same thing. There are quite a lot of SAM's PhotoFacts sheets for almost all of the Sherwood components available on the auction site for less than $10 which is where I purchased mine. The manuals don't show up nearly as often but they eventually do and are a little more expensive. You just need to keep a lookout for them.

I just checked and there's a Photofact for an S-5500, but not the S-5500II, available on the auction site. Since there are so many variations of each model in the Sherwood line, you need to make sure that it matches the model that you have. The seller for this photofact states that he thinks he has all of the Sherwood photofacts.

Good luck,

Paul

That should be a very nice system when done, congrats! :thmbsp: I think that's the same tuner I have in my pile of gear that needs attention, has the nice leather case. Very classy-looking.

"the case is wrapped in leather."

That would be genuine simulated leather.

Those Sherwood tuners are really good.

I have a copy of the Sams folder for the 5500, and I believe it has 7591s, not 7868s. There's a Sams schematic (only - no complete folder) for the 5500III in 934-Servicer, but I don't have it...

My bad, mine's a S2000II tuner. It works great, but it's a mono, so I need to finish tweaking up my EICO MPX. The biggest thing is changing the outputs, they're too close together for newer interconnects to fit.:sigh:

Yes, I should have said that it "looks" like its wrapped in leather. The faceplate also, is not porcelain. It just looks like it.

My apologies to all the hardcore leather aficionados out there.:p:

I'm glad to hear that people seem to think highly of the tuners.

Be carefful when cleaning the faceplate. When these were new the faceplace paint was hard as nails but the coating by now has pretty much lost its protective qualities.

So what if the cab is faux leather the gold frame around the faceplate is real gold plate. The boys at Sherwood did some unusual things, thankfully.

There are two different manuals for the 5500 II, and it depends on your serial number. I think I have them both, but what is the serial number so I can get the right one for you.

Sherwood S-3000 Tube Tuner

I just bought a Sherwood S-3000 Mono Tube Tuner on Ebay. I found some good info on it so far. I don't have it in hand yet since its in shipment, but I have one pic. It looks soo cool I just had to have it!:thmbsp:

Just so ya know, I finally changed the RCAs on the EICO yesterday, & that old mono Sherwood sounds great through it. :thmbsp:

I'd love at least a schematic or a copy of a manual for my 7868 based S5500 II.
Serial number is K26922.
I'll be happy to pay the freight or send something nice along in return for the paper.

That's a different manual, but I should have it. I'll look.
