Do the 18 dollar Valencias work? That is a dream score. Time to learn cabinet refinishing, hint it's not that hard I am refinishing some JBL 4311bs now, easy peasy.

My vals cost way more than $18.More like the then equivalent of $ 190US.
If one were to factor in shipping to Australia for a pair of Vals, then $190US was way ahead of the game. They continue to amaze. With every component upgrade, the Vals are able to pull another ace out from up their sleeves. Many would never have heard what they can do with a high quality signal chain. They do like solid state, they are however going to expose the ability of the preceding components. All of them.Plus,an expository scrutiny of the way the components combine and how well the system has been set-up. Technically flawed.Musically, and as a resolution tool(within it's window),a revelation.

The cabinets are a tad on the rough side, but definately not beyond repair. The rear corners on the tops are mashed up, and a couple of deep gouges will need attention. The grill on one speaker is near perfect, the other has a few issues, but at 5+ feet they are presentable.
I hooked them up to my trusty Pioneer sx-950 and all the drivers work fine. I am just BUSTING over this find. I am going to need some help understanding the 16 ohm rating, though. I know when I ran A/D/S 400's (4 ohm) I had to watch I didn't overheat the MAC1700. The burden was on the receiver and the fact that the 1700 wasn't a good match for 4 ohm load. At 16 ohm, the burden would then be on the drivers? Am I running a risk of blowing the woofers by running them off my Pioneer, or will the receiver accomodate the load rating? Would the MAC1700 be a better match until a proper amp comes along? |

16 oms is a good thing. You'll have no problems playing them on any amp you have..

Altec 846B
I must be living right or something. Just picked up a nice pair of Altec 846B's off CL for $50. Just hauled them in the house, Need a cleanup, and I will post a photo. . .
