Help Me Choose Cornwalls or La Scala's

Well I went and checked out the La Scalla's yesterday and decided to pass on them. They were just too unfinished and rustic that I knew my wife would not let them into the family room plus I don't have the time to refinish them. If anybody is interested in them and lives in Colorado let me know and I will pass on the info. Now I guess I'll check out the Cornwalls. My contact for those has 4 of them for $1,000.

Hopefully youi auditioned the La Scalas so you can now audition the Corns and make a decision on your musical tastes. It's pretty clear that some AK'ers are in the LS camp and some in the Corn camp. The price is certianly right for the Corns. I could have sold as many pair as I wanted last year for about $800/pr. These days who knows, but worst-case scenario you can sell them and recoupe if you change your mind (or to pay your medical bills from having to move 4 Corns :D).

My modified cornwalls come darn close to the quality of my modified la scalas. Look into a larger wood horn for the cornwall.

What do you guys think of these for the same price? I can't tell if these are birch or oak. I'll be heading down there tonight so I'll know soon!

Wife will kill me but that's already happened like 27 times so that forgiveness thing works for me thankfully!

"but honey.......I want to save them for the kids when they get older!" (then the eye roll starts) :lmao:

I think they only made them in Birch? The main question might really be are they factory stained or were they unfinished from the factory.

These are home stained and sloppy at that. However I fell in love with the sound and just had ot have 'em! They aren't in the best shape, dings, veneer peels etc but hey, I need to learn to veneer someday anyway! What the hell! Now I own a set of LaScala's! Yea!

The seem to be from 1975 Serials 3N904/905.

Look skyward and thank him, you have been blessed my son.

My wife hears about posts like this and says....."you guys are so geeky"

To which I reply "yeah, what's your point? Pipe down, I can't hear the music!" (while the volume on my Fisher starts to crank the LS's drowning her out!) :thmbsp:

Update

Two weeks ago I decided to go with the Cornwalls and really like them. I plan on updating the crossovers through Bob Crites when I get the cash and I will probably buy his tweeters as well.

Has anybody done the do it yourself crossover repair and if so is it easy? It is quite a bit less expensive than the all new crossover plan. I haven't soldered anything in 30 years so my skills are not too sharp.

It's easy to do, but if you don't feel like it, send the x-overs to Crites and he will refurb (re-cap) them. Cheaper than buying new ones.

I have my winter project now! Clear as bells! i'll be filling the 'hood with Xmas music all winter long!

#'s 904 & 905 from 1975!
