Just Got a Teac X-700R

YAHOO...the capstan motor spins when lifting the tension arms. Looks like when the belt gets here and after following Vintage TX GREAT thread on how to lube and put a new belt on these decks I will be in business. I was really worried about that motor being shot since it is $149.50 from Teac. On to the cleaning

Cleaned and Lubed and waiting for the belt. Anybody have a good idea on how to get to the switches and pots for a good deoxit bath. They seem to be buried under boards. Do I need to pull the face off :scratch2: I would like to clean all the switches while it's apart. The two that are accessible don't appear to have any holes in the switch to spray into.

I'm glad they have value, but for me, it's the nostalgia I guess and they just look really cool. I really want to play them.
i wouldn't sell them either, i just wanted to mention how valuable they really are.:music:

Thanks. I thought they probably had some value but didn't know how much. Now, to get that deck running. Also, my little sister has a great collection of classic rock LPs. She doesn't play them because she thinks it's too much of a hassle. I've convinced her to bring'em with her when they come up for Turkey-Day. Probably a couple of hundred in the collection. It gives me a chance to do a little recording to the R2R. Orphan LPs are always welcome in my house :D

I have the R2R apart cleaned and lubed and waiting for a new belt. However when removing the tape guide on the rightside to clean and relube it, I discovered there is a spring under the cap. It is connected with a small screw. I'm not really sure how this spring is supposed to be oriented or what purpose it serves. I reinstalled it with the cap screw centeredin the spring. In other words the spring is coiled around the screw. Any feedback will be most helpful. Sorry about the poor pics as I'm not much of a photographer.

Found a service manual for the x-7R model at HiFiEngine. It says it is a "Spring Ground."

It's there to avoid static buildup - just telling they know what they where doing when making a tapedeck

remember the TEAC slogan "Build in Japan by fanatics" ?

edit: bummer - it was "Made in Japan by fanatics"

The spring is suppose to be hold by the screw, and then before you screw the cap on lift the spring so it's positioned on the shaft edge.

Pictures for you:

So, the spring is supposed to be wound around the cap-screw. I was messing with it again yesterday and managed to break a small piece off the end. It is still long enough to be functional, though. Thanks for the help, again.

Not good if it's too short, the roller can have a scraping noise while in play-mode.
Does yours have a small white or black washer behind the rolller ?

It has a small black washer. I broke off about 3/8" piece. Can this spring just be replaced with another solid copper wire, say a piece of CAT5 perhaps.

don't think it'll work, solid core CAT5 isn't very solid - bending a thin paperclip might do the trick :)

Hopefully, I can use the wire as is. I just hope it doesn't break again when I try to bend it into shape. I think I can come up with a wire that will substitute if need be.

The belt came today. I put it on and am listening to the tape now as I type this. It started off with only one channel working. So, I shot some deoxit to the balance control. Still only one channel, then as I played with the DBX switch there was some static and crackle in the dead channel, then it worked but sounded like crap. I worked the switch some and it now plays out of both channels strong. I know that switch needs some deoxit, but is there a secret to getting to the switch without disassembling the whole R2R :D I think this will be a really good sounding deck once it is properly cleaned. Listening to "The Best of Traffic" right now and it sounds pretty sweet. I haven't heard a R2R since 1976 I think. This is pretty nice. :music: If anybody has an idea on getting to those switches I would really appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who has lent information and assistance in helping me get this deck playing again. And a big thanks to Vintage TX who has really helped in this thread and behind the scenes.:thmbsp:

CONGRATS, brother geode!

don't know 'bout the dbx switch and i don't mean to harp on this but remember that to get the best sound of the deck and those old tapes, to constantly clean those heads and guides with iso alcoho on q-tips. i do it after every tape play/pass.

Thanks Jay. I demagged the heads and did a little more head cleaning. I'm listening to Beatles Revolver right now and I must say this player sounds really good.
