SACD recommendations

Another vote for the Living Stereo SACDs.

Also very fond of the Doobie Brothers Toulouse Street issue from MoFi.

Picked this up the other day. Excellent sound stage on this SACD version. About as good as any I have heard.

I spent some more time with this album tonight and at higher volumes. This is one exciting album to listen to on a good system! The clarity, sound stage, and instrument sound quality is superb on my system. Granted you can hear a few strange sounds here and there off the stage (TM breathing?) but it adds to the ambience. I've listened to several tracks half a dozen times. The reviews on SA-CD are pretty good but if there is a better sounding SACD out there I want to buy it. Highly recommended.

This new San Francisco Symphony SACD of Mahler's 8th Symphony is one of the finest recordings of this work available. The hall ambience comes through clearly, and the antiphonal brass choirs and soloists really make the work come alive. Highly recommended.

Picked up Sarah today in SACD. Now we all know this is a milestone piece of work, and even though this SACD shows the limits of the original recording, I have to say that Clifford's horn and Sarah's many multiple octaves have never sounded better in my living room. Very nice!

My wife loves listening to this album in Redbook and is very familar with the album's sound on my system. She came in while I was playing it tonight and asked what I had done to the stereo. She accused me of buying a new component or something. When I showed her it was a $16 SACD she asked if I could buy more of these...

How's that for a blind test?

After months of trying to find BB at a decent price, I finally found one on the bay and it came in the mail today. Yes, just like LIB, this is one fine mix and a must have SACD. Just like many of you told me...

Another one I've been looking for at a decent price and finally found on the bay (for only $15!)

Overall, Steely Dan may be my favorite band and to hear them on SACD is just grand. Very well mixed! Probably this album has the widest soundstage and most discrete instrument location of anything I have heard on system #2.

Superb SACD!

Derek and the Dominos - Layla

(Eric Clapton and Duane Allman if you did not know)

I bought this to add to my Eric Clapton collection. I had the redbook version and as everyone knows, the original recordings are not the best. I can't say this SACD version fixes that but this is the best I have ever heard these great tracks.

Update: Track #14 is a cut way above the others on this disk. Thorn Tree in the Garden is quite dynamic with a darker noise floor. The other tracks are on the flat side I assume caused by the quality of the original recording?

Of the three Elton SACDs I have this one is my favorite. Maybe its because it is one of my favorite Elton albums in the first place, but it does seem to have even better SQ than Elton John - Elton John and Chateau. I would rate Chateau second.

Strings are exceptional as compared to the redbook version

Thanks Stoutblock, I have the 180gram Vinyl Reissue and it sounds great, but this is a Must Have SACD and I will be looking for it.

Thanks for the review,

Dennie

Glad to know you agree with my initial assessment :D

Picked this one up yesterday. I'm a big Getz fan and greatly enjoy this album in redbook. Yes SACD is even better and the vibraphone will test the transient and onset performance of your speakers. The redbook version can get a little harsh at times but the SACD really brings out the sound of a smooth vibraphone complete with lovely after tones. The soliloquy tweeter and midrange seem to like sounding like a vibraphone!

Stereo mix seems a little like 1958 and there may be an audio hole in the center soundstage on my system. Don't get me wrong, what is coming out is quality sound but Cal's vibes are all coming from the left speaker and is quite dominant (but nice!). Stan's sax is mostly on the right. Other instruments fill in OK but better on some tracks than other. I'm being a little picky, as I like the magic of this album and was hoping for perfection.

Man is this some smooth music that I have always loved to listen to. Quality is great and you can hear the strikes on the vibes clear as day. I hear some kick drum action that is not even on the CD version. This music always puts a smile on my face and with the SACD it is now bigger. :D

Didn't scroll through to see if its been mentioned but Roxy Music Avalon is very good sounding SACD. The redbook layer on this one is excellent as well.

Picked up the MoFi SACD version today. This is my favorite DB Album. I don't think it is spectacular over the redbook version until you get to "Clear as the Driven Snow" and then this SACD version really stands out. Listened to this track several times and its like a totally different song as compared to the redbook version.

Initial SACD DVD-A playlist

I just ordered a Yamaha DVD-S2700 (CD/SACD/DVD player). I need some new music to go with it. At first, I'm trying not to duplicate music I already have.

I listen to Rock & Roll mostly, but I also do blues, jazz and international (like Wynton Marsalis, Inti Illimani).

Here's my initial acquisiton list. What do you think?

Brothers in Arms
Dire Straits
Super Audio CD - Canadian Import

The Dark Side of the Moon [SACD]
Pink Floyd
Super Audio CD - SACD Hybrid

Brain Salad Surgery [Deluxe Edition]
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Super Audio CD - SACD Hybrid / Special Edition

461 Ocean Boulevard [Hybrid SACD]
Eric Clapton
Super Audio CD - SACD Hybrid

Willy and the Poor Boys
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Super Audio CD - SACD Hybrid

Gaucho
Steely Dan
DVD Audio

Those are all great albums with the possible exception to EC 461. Nothing wrong with it I just don't think it is much more special than the redbook version.

I would add Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed.

Thanks for your reply. I just bought all on my list today. Some were cheaper on Amazon, and some were cheaper at Barnes & Noble.

Next round, I'll peruse this thread more carefully for my addtional selections.

These two Stones ablums are some of the best Rock SACDs ever made!

Also check SA-CD.net for other options. I don't agree with some of the ratings but not a bad place to start...

I recently picked of a copy of Dire Straits Brothers In Arms 20th Anniversary Edition SACD.

It's an import - Vertigo 9871498.

I currently own 47 SACDs, some outstanding and some, not so much. This one is hands down the finest sounding SACD or CD I own! Truly amazing. I'm playing back on a McIntosh MCD500. This disc just blows me away every time I play it. I give it my highest recommendation to any Dire Straits fan or anyone who just wants to hear the potential the format has to offer.:thmbsp:
