Underrated / Unknown Jazz Vocalists

Not a lot of male vocalists being mentioned...I'll add the late Kenny Rankin to the list. He recorded some realllly nice stuff over a fairly-long career. I don't know if you can call Steve Tyrell jazz...but he has a way with a song for sure. He has a number of CDs of "standards" that demand the mixing & consumption of martinis.

And...I'm surprised The Manhattan Transfer hasn't been mentioned. Some of their early stuff could be considered "cutesy", but overall their discography is a jazzy one. If you dig intricate harmony, scatting & who knows what, pick up some MT.

Lambert Hendricks & Ross

Manhattan Tfer +1:tresbon: A great group to see live.
No modern under the radar list could be complete without a nod to:

A big second to Tierney Sutton...gal can sing. I also have at least one recording by each of the following:
Sophie Milman
Ann Hampton Callaway
Eliane Elias
Karrin Allyson
All verrrry good.
And, don't get me started on Holly Cole. I don't know if you can call her jazz or what, but she does it for me!

I have multiple of all of these except Karrin. Had one and sold it...will try another in the future.

A couple more to add to the list:

Roberta Gambarini
Diane Hubka
Sony Holland
Tierney Sutton

Art, you probably have more jazz albums than the rest of us combined. Any hidden gems you want to share?

I tend to think of most of the ladies I have as common or mainstrean...probably because I've listened to them for so long. You all have covered many that I would list.

Jacintha
Esperanza Spalding
Chiara Civello
Carla Cook
Claudia Acuna
Kate McGarry
Stacey Kent

A few that come to mind that I'm not sure were listed previously.

Just a couple to add

Etta Jones ( Not to be confused with Etta James)
Arthur Prysock

Lots to check out on this thread!

True dat, although I think a lot of her appeal is her mastery of the bass. Excellent vocalist, but a truly tremendous bassist.:thmbsp:

She is a gifted artist and is already passing on her craft. She is originally a Portland native. A whole lot of talent out here in Northwest Oregon.
