Yamaha 6160 receiver, with a Western Digital Media Centre running over HDMI playing AVI files in AC3 format do not get played in 5.1 surround, but the old 2 channel.

I've been through all my settings, (Yeesh, does that manual suck! How many undocumented features or steps have you found in it?!) and everything seems okay.

Can somebuddy give me a pointer on this?

Thanks,

SweetDoug

Don't understand...when I look up a Western Digital Media Center, all I find is information about an external hard drive with built-in memory card slots and USB connectivity.

Where does the HDMI come in?

Hdmi wdmc

There's an HDMI out on the WDMC that runs to the TV or whatever unit you wish to output to from the WDMC. There's also a digital audio out.

Are you routing the sound from the TV to the audio receiver or directly from the player to the receiver?

With the setup, I've got an hdmi cable carrying the signal audio and visual from the WDMC into the receiver, and out via HDMI to the TV. (which has an HDMI input-Sony wega old school crt). The sound does not get broadcast over the TV (It's been turned off via controls on the TV menu.)

I'm getting sound out of all the speakers, just not surround sound. All I've got is the left and right channels on the receiver lite up.

The WDMC is the Western Digital Media Centre, an little box that plays all your files, AVI and most video, MP3/4, jpegs, et cetera. It's very cool. Has HDMI out on it, with an optical out for sound, too.

Try adding the optical digital audio cable. It shouldn't matter but you never know.

Again, is it the WDTV? I keep asking because WDMC keeps coming up as some older external hard drive thingy, not a media player, per se.

What is the actual name on the product decal where the serial number, etc. is located?

I would suggest trying the optical output with the HDMI for video and then the optical output with component if the first option doesn't work. This might tell you if it is an HDMI issue or a broader issue with CODECs etc.

Problem fixed.

I am such a schlub!!

I was out scanning for fixes to the problem when I read a review of the device and the reviewers did the same thing!

Going into the sound options, you can set it to either "Stereo" or "Digital".

Care to guess what I had it set to?

Thanks guys!!

Now if I can only find something to play on my 7.1 surround sound system Doesn't appear to be too many things.

Any idea on how to spread the sound around to the surround rears, too?

Again, thanks for the input,

SweetDoug

Well, I for one, still don't know what "it" is, because WDMC doesn't seem to be a media player in my searches.

Will you please provide the exact model name or product number from the label so that I might be able to advise someone else properly if I see a similar problem?

OK, so it is WDTV, not WDMC.

Here is WDMC...a big difference from WDTV. WDMC doesn't play anything per se, it's just a fancy external storage/harddrive. Whereas WDTV is an actual media player, but has no internal storage.

Now that I've got it up and working with SS, it's great.

I'd highly recommend it.

Way more betterer than Apple TV (Can't play 1080) and plays everything.

Very, very pleased with the little box.

Yeah, I have the WD TV Live. Works pretty good for hauling a bunch of movies to friends houses, etc. with one of the laptop form factor external HDDs.

Yes! I've been corrected! For the life of my, I've been calling my WD TV! the WDMC as in media centre.

Brain fart or my buddy calling it that, I guess.

SweetDoug

In any case, fantastic little box.
