The Who at the Superbowl

I thought there performance was definitely flawed. Given their age and the fact that the material performed would be difficult to do coming out "cold". It would be like any band having to come out and do their grand finale at the beggining and not at the end without a true warm-up. Although they have played large venues before obviously, it may have been very difficult for them to actually hear themselves as well as each other. I still feel they did a 10x's better job than the Stone's did in Detroit.

Daltrey was totally lip synching that crap - no up close shots of him, mic placement and breathing was wrong on several occasions. Pete's vox and playing seemed to be live tho. Overall a horrible performance, imo.

I totally agree! Good light show though.

It was fine.......Couple of old farts but what the hell....I'm an old fart! At one point I thought of Will Farrell with his cowbell. I enjoyed it for what it was.

What was it exactly? A fake "live" performance?

Jeebis, don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

If you're gonna lip synch a show - put on Who's Next and pretend you're in front of the mirror.

I posted this in the subscriber section, but it was sad enough for me to post it here too. Rock and roll used to be about rebellion - rockers thumbing their nose at the establishment. Now rock anthems are appropriated by advertisers, television shows, etc. Even worse, they are being rewritten to make them acceptable. In one of the promos, they were playing "My Generation" over a video collage. They changed the line "I hope I die before I get old" to "I hope I don't die, I want to grow old." I guess the former turned out to be a prophecy for one of the members, and the latter has become the reality for the surviving members.

Regards,

D-Ray

Aren't all Super Bowl half-time performances pre-recorded?

According to a CBS executive, The Who was selected to play the Super Bowl because it would give the young people an idea the band behind the theme music for the CSI shows. The CSI shows and the Super Bowl were on CBS.

Yeah, that was some gen-Y remix guy for a TV-on-your-phone service, Will.I.AM or some such nonsense. He was trying to be sassy or something - had nothing to do with the Who's lyrics other than slicing them into his mix ... obscene it was ...

Keith and John are much missed, for sure ... but Rock has been bought by the ad men for years - go back to Phil Collins and the beer ads, or even the outrage when "Revolution" became a Nike ad ...!
Time to remember Howard Beale, get out of your chair, go to the window, throw it open, and yell "I'm as mad as hell and I won't take it anymore!"

Meanwhile, all these raging bulls are suckin' at the teat of financial in-dependence.

All Super Bowl half-time shows are pre-recorded.

You mean the AUDIO is pre-recorded, right?
We caught a couple parts where you could see Roger flubbed a line and the audio never missed a beat.
But Pete seemed live, at least in places ...

We saw the Roxy Music reunion tour back in 2000 - and Ferry talked about going into the studio to record "sweetener tracks"
before the tour. Those are tracks that play over the PA system during the show and they play along with them.
Afterwards I managed to grab hold of a dozen or so ROIO (boots) from the tour. They seemed nearly identical,
so I'm guessing the "sweetener" was cranked up for the tour - and they're not the only band doing it ...!

Geez guys give em a break. If they wanted you to play the Superbowl you wouldn't turn it down.

I was disappointed the that they agreed to do it,cause rock and roll is all about sticken it to the man. They should have done some obscure songs that only the real who fans know and taken everybody by suprise as a final act of defiance!!

One of the reasons I never turned the TV on in the first place. The whole spectacle has gotten commercialized to the point that it's completely sickening. I don't blame 'em for playing at the superbowl (still an amazing invitation), but changing lyrics? Those guys have enough cash already to refuse.

Ridiculous.

I didn't like it at all. If Townshend and Daltrey want to do something new, that is fine but they shouldn't call themselves the Who. But to have them make fools of themselves is pathetic, especially for a band that as young men sang "hope I die before I get old."

What? You did not think they actually meant that, do you? They were trying to make a buck. The fact that Daltry showed up on Highlander, the series was the first indication of making money. The most recent was playing the weekly murderer on CSI.

The 60s called. They want their misguided idealism back... :D

Actually, Pete kept moving a part of his coat that was getting in the way of his guitar. Several times he had mis fired chords go completely silent where they should have been giant whole note power chords.
I thought that the other guitarist's parts where missing in the mix, and overall, the vocals where way too loud.
The drummer did a good job.

Bingo!

Anybody catch Gretchen Wilson a year or so ago when she sang "Barracuda" on that VH1 show? She nailed it, made Heart look silly. That's what I mean.

We love these songs, and it takes young people in their prime to get the energy up and good musicianship to keep it tight.

Saw it. She was good, but, that does not mean that Ann Wilson could not belt it out today. If you don't like a performance, fine. But don't give a pedantic diatribe on it. sheesh!

I love the Who and over the past few decades have seen them a number of times. Yesterday was embarrassing to put it mildly. I felt bad for them and for us fans. Time to hang it up gentlemen. But, it was a CBS show and the Who do have theme songs on a number of CSI shows. So the commercial tie-in was patently obvious.
