Old Time Wrasslin'

You forgot Jose Lothario !

Ahhh OS!

Indeed you are correct sir!

Man, I can remember hearing that name announced for a match.

Hey, when is the last time you have been to CC? I married a girl from Sinton. :D

I need to drive down that way soon & check out the sights. I love CC & it is a treasure in Texas. Also, the Rockport, Aransas Pass, Portland, & Port Aransas area is grand.

When I first saw Rome's list, I was going to add Jose Lothario, too...until I saw OldSkool's post. Good times to be had in those days. I always loved Fritz Von Erich's Iron Claw. You gotta love them rasslers with a famous signature move. You just knew it was all over but the shoutin when the claw got applied.

While working at Turner Broadcasting in the 80's, I had the pleasure of working some of the Georgia Championship Wrestling shows as the engineer.

I remember seeing the wrestlers in the men's room slitting their foreheads and then using styptic (sp?) pencils to make them stop bleeding, so that they would pop open and bleed when hit in the ring.

Remember the Great Kabookie? (not sure on the spelling). One of his claims to fame was chewing up dry, green tempora poster paint and then spitting on his hands and tagging his opponents and everyone else with the green paint. Unfortunately for him, he also manged to spew this disgusting green mess all over the ring, the studio, and the cameras, and when the corporate VP of Engineering found out about it, this came to a screeching halt. I used to get stuck cleaning up the 4 studio cameras, so I was glad when this was banned.

The fans used to line up at the gate to the parking lot and stop all the cars if they thought it was one of the performers coming in. We used to have huge crowds show up and only about 2/3 could get in the studio. Some of the better looking female fans were "escorted" to the dressing area from time to time. You can use your imagination about what went on there.

Remember "TV Time Limits"? Gordon Solie? Freddy? And, even though I had long since learned that television wrestling was scripted and planned in advance, it was still surprising to see three guys who had just finished beating the crap out of each other in the ring with folding chairs, put on their street clothes and go out to lunch together.

The wrestling producer used to pay the TBS employees around $50 cash each under the table when you worked on the show. The first time I worked one of the shows, I asked him about my $50? He said, "Oh, you know about that? He handed me the money. The guy I was substituting for had warned me to make sure I got it, because the producer would probably try to stiff me as a "new guy." :thmbsp:

After he got to know me, the producer (whose name I can't for the life of me remember) turned out to be a fairly nice guy who tried several times to get me to wrestle for him when someone didn't show up for the shoot. He once offered me $500 to wrestle, but I turned him down, since I wasn't trained as to how to fall, etc.

Those were the days.

You bet! I have some fond memories of my childhood watching these entertainers on a 19' B&W tv set.

He was always a draw to a match & like "The Missing Link" they were a sight to behold.

Good post!

This thread brings back a lot of memories. I remember when it seemed the sleeper hold and the claw were the epitome of wrasslin' moves. Big guys in onesies grabbing each other. Those were the days. Portland Wrestling on Friday nights.

In the 80's I used to love the Road Warriors and Can-Am Connection, plus the dudes that did the funky walk, was that the Bushwackers? Rowdy Roddy Piper, those were the days.

Yep the Bushwackers, before called the 'Sheepherders' not sure who they were before that.

I remember an 80's show were the Sheepherders were in a Lingerie shop trying to find something to buy 'Mum'. Just watching them grab, lick the merchandise not to mention scare the heck outta the babes in the store,
hilarious & classic!!:stupid:

Yea, the Sheepherders were pretty good entertainers. Also, Randy "Macho Man" Savage was a favorite of mine during the 80s along with his beautiful manager "Elizabeth."

Whatever happened to the "Ultimate Warriror?"

My favorites were The Undertaker, Big John Studd, Yokozuna, Andre "The Giant" Roussimof, Jesse "The Body" Ventura.

Hey was "Mean Gene" Okerlund ever a wrastler?

I always thought it woulda been cool to see Don King the boxing promoter be a wrestling promoter. His troll hairdo is very intimidating, lol! :D

I think I posted in another wrasslin' thread that I thought Randy 'Macho Man' Savage was the best wrestler interview in the 80's bare-none IMO.
I thought he was funny, egotistic, over the top not to mention the outrageous outfits he wore, Elizabeth was the icing on the cake!

I have read that the 'Ultimate Warrior' is wrasslin' overseas these days.
Jim Helwig legally changed his name to 'Warrior' some years ago to avoid Vince McMahon from profitting on the name??

Hope the original poster doesn't mind us going from the 60's into the 80's?

Rather doubt "Mean Gene" ever applied a hammerlock or figure four. Gene spent a number of years in the mid-60s as a Top-40 jock in Minneapolis on WDGY & KDWB as "Gene Leader". Got a little long in the tooth for Top-40 radio...hooked up with promoter Wally Karbo & Verne Gagne with "All Star Wrestling"...and the rest is history. I wish Jesse was still governor...at least when he opened his mouth you would hear EXACTLY what was on his mind.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Dr. X/The Destroyer. The Chicago matches between Dicky Bruiser and Dr. X were the stuff of legends!

Tojo Yamamoto

I can't believe no one mentioned Tojo Yamamoto. In Nashville he was the biggest villain of them all and strangely my favorite wrestler . I was never really into the "sport" but enjoyed watching it live at the local TV studios.

Tojo Yamamoto died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his apartment in Hermitage, TN.. February 19, 1992 :sigh:

i went to high school in texas and mr wrestling #1 was a teache at my college preparatory

Carmen Basilio was my PE instructor in college. I realize he wasn't a wrestler, but he was involved in several of what were later voted as the greatest fights of all time. He was a forerunner of boxers like Arturo Gatti.

I grew up on Tojo.....he was able to capitalize on the red neck prejudices.I also loved Stan Hanson with his bully bravado.Times were so much simpler then.....

Superstar Billy Graham was the greatest of all time!
The villion that many loved. Filled seats as champ! He set the path for all those that copied him.
He could not wrestle, but he could sell an oppents move.

PS
Hogan hung up on Vince but left his car phone on and Vince heard everthing, as Hogan was going off. Who now admits he was just being a jerk and loves Vince.
Not so sure how Vince feels.
We have common friends.

Oh dear, The Bushwackers. From down around these here parts (New Zealand). Rumour has it that a flock of sheep in the South Island have eerie facial similarities to those crazy boys :puke:

Who remembers Ox Baker? Big dude (obviously) with a bald head and giant handlebar moustache/beard thing on his face
