Attention all AK motorcyclists ......

I have always worn one; even before it was the law in CA. Yes, they do split in half, and in fact that's a good thing, because it adds another inch of stopping distance for your brain, and scientifically speaking, can save you to have it split open in that case. Obviously nothing is "safe", and helmets are no exception. I will always wear mine. But I also have to say that my wife disagrees, saying that she feels that her awareness and vision is impaired by the helmet to a point where she feels more likely to get into an accident with one on, and although if that happens, she's admittedly more likely to be killed. But her point is that she would rather be killed in a less-likely-to happen accident, than to survive with lifetime paralysis and lost limbs, etc etc, in a more-likely-to-happen accident with her helmet on. So I can see both sides of the debate, and I think both are valid arguments. Just to clarify about my wife: She has at one time been a professional Hollywood motocross stunt girl, so she knows plenty well to form an opinion like that.

They don't make motor cycle helmets with better fields of vision? What about the old black lids?

I've never had a bicycle helmet impair my vision. They just make you look like a nerd.

Once you get over that though, it only makes sense to me to take as many safety precautions as possible.

I've seen how motorcycle helmets SAVE LIVES.....including.....MY OWN!

There are a LOT of deluded motorcyclists who, because they've been lucky enough not to have gone down, feel they are 'immune' to an accident???
I also feel that there is the....."I'm too macho to wear a helmet" crowd.

The graveyards are full of macho types.....................................................

I have a very comfortable helmet, as far as helmets go, but it still sucks wearing it; except that it reduces your overall risk of death in a crash by 37%.

From NTSB...

Helmets save lives. DOT-compliant helmets (DOT FMVSS 218) are extremely effective. They can prevent injury and death from motorcycle crashes.
  • Wearing a helmet reduces the overall risk of dying in a crash by 37%.
  • In addition to preventing fatalities, the use of helmets reduces the need for ambulance service, hospitalization, intensive care, rehabilitation, and long-term care as a result of motorcycle crashes.
  • Wearing a helmet does not increase the risk of other types of injury.

Still though should be a personal choice; considering, of course, it's probably not just you personally affected (kids, family, friends, etc.).

What an enormously, enormously important point, and so rarely emphasized.

While it is indeed your personal choice whether or not you wear a helmet, please take a moment and give some thought to your wife or your mother, or whoever's going to be changing your diapers.
