You know when the doctor comes & says I have good news & bad news…
PRO's
Packed well.
No cockroach eggs.
It WORKED straight out of the box ( almost ) the unit sat for a LONG time…
The pots & switches were all a bit CRUNCHY. But just working em got signal to pass.
Meters work ( put my LED's in already ) .
It's fairly clean internally.
The main board has had all the feed thru's done.
SOME recapping done on main board.
I NOW have a use for the US power transformer!

Con's
Every connector has been de pinned and wires soldered to main male pins.
Someone decided it would be better instead of dealing with the feed thru's on the filter board just to re do the top traces in " trouble area's " with wire. ( not to bad of a job ).
Back panel is pretty rusted for the input jacks. more cosmetic then non functional… just OOOGGLLLYYY.
1 VERY bulgy cao in the main PS board.
Lacks bottom end.

The Tomorrow plan
Add multi voltage power transformer.
Replace main board caps.
Make the PS adjustments.
Remove front panel Wash, clean detail.
Spray all switches & pots.

Then see what the deal is…
I need to make a parts order for the BA-3K might as just add all of this to it.

Ok you're on. Nice piece, cept the rust.
Looks good. The cables remind me of the stupid who did pass throughs from the driver board to the motherboard on my ba 3k.:puke2::bash:

5 hours !

But I'm now INTERNATIONAL power converted.
That was NOT FUN.. but it was a challenge!
So I though I had all the caps to do the main board… WHOOPS
I didn't have any 1000uf @ 80 ( or better )
BUT I did have an 800uf @ 400VDC which I HAD to shoe horn in.
The one it replaced was right at death's door…
Doing some " critical " listening on cans.. I had a SLIGHT hum.
If I squeezed the originals caps can it went away.. and it was a bit warm.
PLUS there were some really REALLY poor connections on the main board.
So that for now is all band aided.

To get the transformer in I had to take apart MOST of the rear chassis
Including all the RCA connectors sleeves, since the barrels were corroded it was quite a treat.. But more or less it was a plug N play EXCEPT the green wire going to the meter lights… right now I have it at full length and I cut the original transformer wire and wire nutted it together.

And now DRUM roll… the CA-3K and the BA-3K are now singing together for the first time.
But the Pre lacks low end which a recap will help out a bunch… 90% of the "STUFF" in the box is original

Partial cap order done...
What I need now is a newer back ( one that doesn't look like it's off U-571 ) .

And this was an AFTER pix. post clean up, post hardware changeout ( 2 screws I had to mini vice grip out ) and post RCA brass-o polish out. for some reason this was the only area affected. If I could find a CLEANER back panel I would trade it out.

More NUDIES

Sprayed volume control using the pin drill method ( worked GREAT ).
Removed front panel and cleaned all knobs and switch caps.
Cleaned Meter lenses and meter faces.
Sprayed all switches.
Cleaned all the rings that go around the RCA connectors.
Put it all back together.

That is as far as I can go at this point, till the cap order comes in...

Well international looks good at the front.
The back is a sad story , I wouldn't want tell my children.:thumbsdn:

A little sandpaper, a can of black paint, and a label maker would remedy that back panel just fine, as long as no one could see it. ;)

Since it's in the back.... I will wait to see if one becomes available, since I'm waiting for other bits as well.... It bothers my OCD detector... but I'm more a function before form kinda guy.. I can let it ride.... for now...

While I'm waiting Tuner time

Assuming……( Oh you silly person you )
So I got a CA-3K face, with end caps.
So I thought I would just POP em off and see what there is to see.
I cut all the glue seams.. and came up with a long bar to pry the caps off the ends .. from the back…and it took ALOT of force to get 1 side to budge… How can that all be GLUE holding that on.. Well it's not..
Not that easy… the end caps are spot welded to the front ( see pix #2 ) then machined, sanded and anodized. The OTHER side I had to used a inverted chassis punch to be the pry point..POP off the other side came.. So now I have 2 nice end caps.. and I went to dry fit in the front of the tuner….
KERIST.. the CA-3K is 7" tall the TU is 6.25"

GRRRRRRRRRRRR

Well crud. I guess you'll need to do a little modifying to make those work for the TU.

Well SLIGHT problem…. The chrome bands… which are closed rectangles, If I cut the bottoms the chrome will now be an upside down U.. and I do not know how well it would hold up.. PLUS In order to get the ends to look right… I would have to mill them to be " shorter " as opposed to a wet cut bandsaw…I just keep jumping ahead without thinking thing through.. I guess that's called gaining EXPERIENCE….( the hard way ) … I do not think I can separate the chrome for a re anodize, so I would have to see how OFF gun black dye would look

I'm always fascinated by the things you do, Mike. Auto bulbs for meter lights, major electronic restorations, mechanical restoration and more. Will follow this thread till you finish.

Just working with what is in front of me.....or off to the side... maybe something in this box.... ( SMIRK )

HOLY TOLEDO......
So a BA-3K US version pop's up on E bay.. with " issues "...
I LOW BALL em and he accepts my offer.....
