AU-717 Rebuild/Upgrade

Ok decided to start on unit #1 which is cosmetically really nice. Probably a 9 out of a 10. No scratches on the face or dials or back panel, zero rust, clean inside and out other than honest dust from years of use. Unit # 2 works flawlessly but is a train wreck cosmetically and is missing the power switch all of the internal shielding panels and the top cover. If anyone has a cover or power switch they want to part with PM me please. More on that one later.

1. Unit fires up fine lights up DBT then idles dimly lit.
2. Clean audio out of the left channel only. Some small crackles can be heard out of the right side if you crank into the volume a bit. No blown fuses etc. Likely the fusistors.

Starting the rebuild tonight. (likely to use upgrades provided by Leestereo!) :D

Pictures will be all the teardowns so if anyone ever "needs to know where a wire went" or how the cable routing was done from the factory etc.

Nice pictures, especially the macro ones.

Hoping that there will be "sound shoot-out" of this restored one and your cosmetically challenged/fully functional stock one (please)!

Leestereo, the shoot-out is certainly part of the plan, hence the reason I opted to repair the unit with the dead channel prior to the beat-up yet fully functional one. This poor beat-up unit looks like a pet that someone used for spare parts yet still lives. I need a top cover, and all the shielding that goes inside of it and a power switch. (someone installed a lamp rocker switch inline on the cord). Power switch appears the same as the BA-2000 uses.

Ordered 350.00 worth of parts stock from Mouser today... hopefully it will arrive by Saturday, they are claiming weather delays caused a backup for shipping thus my order placed today wont ship until tomorrow. Be nice if Fed-Ex still gets it here by Saturday (usually ground from Dallas-Austin = 1 day)

Removed all of the electrolytic caps and removed the glue from the power supply board. This was a special blend that really put up a good fight. I cut a razor blade into 1/4 size and locked it into a small pair of vice grips, then softened the glue with some Acetone. Never had the glue put up this much of a fight before, usually its fairly dried out, this batch was akin to Liquid Nails!

I have a few resistors to change from corrision damage and I will swap out the diodes and such before mounting the new cans.

Egad, is that typical price for AU rebuild parts cost??
I was seduced by her reputation & exotic dark complexion but don't think I knew what I was getting into when I picked up that mute AU/TU-717 last week.

NOOOOO not at all!!!
I just place large batch orders in general since it drives the price down per part considerably. When ordering parts Mouser has breaks at 10+ or 25+ so my order is for 3-5x the # of components required, plus the additional 100 caps to rebuild my CD-10 x-over and a transformer to convert that to 120v US power.

Also I am rebuilding 2 AU-717s that I own (this it unit #1) so the base order was for 2x the parts even before I padded it with spares. I use large old school wooden library card catologs to store all my spare parts inventory. Its just a hobby for me but I enjoy having every part I can think of on hand. Excessive if you do not do this all the time, I rebuild a unit per month easily.

Parts arrived! Giant bag of Mouser parts its like Santa came.
First operation... repair my eye glasses... soldered the hinge back together then dremel for clearance. Now I can see to finish rebuilding the AU
