More idler magic

This is for fans of the idler movement. Finished this one a little over a week ago. It is a Russco Studio Pro B, not completely stock. Sounds pretty good.

Well, I'm an idler fan and must say that I've looked hard at the Russcos wondering how they would be in a massive plinth. Other than the plinth, have you changed anything? Basic cleaning/lube or....?

Nothing too exotic, new idler wheel, new idler arm, disassembled and lubed motor, cleaned out bearing well, you should have seen the gunk that came out of the bottom of that - nasty. Re-centered the idler pulley on the motor shaft. I sanded the base and sprayed it with charcoal hammertone.

Sounds like you've done all the basic stuff and some more. Wish I could hear it. If it sounds as nice as it looks then you are in business. I know that I love the toe tapping effect that an idler has on me - great drive.

I know that table well, it was also sold under the Gates brand. Did you replace the felt on the platter? I have two old brodcast tables that I want to get up and running this summer. I remember there was a spray availible in broadcast cats. to remove the blue and theys sold replacement felt.

What do we do these days?

We had one of those at the AFRTS radio station I worked at back in 1975. It was sitting in a corner, unused. We used a Rek-O-Cut and, believe it or not, a Dual 1229 for the 12" and smaller records. We sometimes got 16" records and had to use the Rek-O-Cut for those. Most of the equipment at that station was ancient! Why we had the Dual is a story for another day but it worked!

AFRTS is Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. It was commonly called "AFARTS." Twice a week for two hours I played the junk AFRTS required, read news and command bulletins AND played blues - from Louis Jordan and John Lee Hooker to Canned Heat to British Blues (Mayall, Keef Hartley, Clapton, etc.).
