FedEx Man Brought My Vintage Sony Receiver today!

I had posted in another thread, that I had Paid for this unit, but had reservations about the seller.
I lucked out,as he used those little Air bags with
Wads of Newspaper stuffed around it.:nono:
He did Bubble wrap it,which most likely saved its ass.
The guy answered ONE question from me the whole
process,I sent the 6th email to him this morning
threatening to come down to Tucson for Pizzia.
Worst communication ever,I was starting to Wig out!
Anyways~Top of the line "1975 to 78" STR-7800SD,
125 watts rms into 8 ohms.It is in Great shape,
Both meters and all the lights work perfect.
The tuning dail is tuned right on and lights up red
when tuned in stereo,Nice green back lit dail.
All the knobs and dails are static free and smooth,
(Cleaning and a little Deoxit is planned for tonight)
Nice warm sounding tonal quality for solid state
and not too Polite in my book,More listening and
rotating of different speakers is in order for sure!
For starters Ive hooked it up to my 4 ohm
Polk Audio SDA-1A's listening to some French Canadian FM station out of Vancouver B.C. 80 miles away!I dont have a camera to post pics of my own,
but will soon.Ive used the pic's from the auction.
More later,Yeah Haw!!!
(ps-I need a new/big stereo rack)
Mark.

Congratulations! Glad it arrived in one piece and in useable condition! :thmbsp: Hope you can get some better pics, those ebay pics are kinda blurry!

Whats that little window thingy next to the big dial? I'll bet she sounds sweet. Sony was no slouch in the day. They were the first to offer auto-reverse in the PX over seas in the late 70's early 80's. Very nice indeed. Looking forward to your impressions of it.

Mark;

Extremely cool looking!

I'm trying to make space for another Sony (I've got a 6060 HF) and am considering one like your new baby.

Could you tell me if the face is brushed thin steel or aluminum stamped and formed around a metal or plastic backing or is it the thicker machined aluminum found on most of the vintage goodies? I have a modest collection of the machined stuff and think it would be cool to have a quality receiver with a stamped faceplate so that I can spin an evolutionary tale to anyone who cares about how the piece bridges the shift from solid metal and wood component characteristics to that of black plastic (and enjoy the rich sound while I'm at it!).

Thanks Gang,
It sounds Sweet,Im loving the Tuning section!
Great Reception thru a R.S. Yagi antenna on my roof.
Dawoofer-
The little window next to the Volume knob is the
Muting button that clicks down to mute.
Glenn,
Thanks for the Brochure scan offer,I will PM you!
You were part of the inspiration awhile back that
got me into this series with the 6800SD.
Im very glad I kept looking for the Big daddy!
Hey Ralph,
I still havent popped its hood yet to take a peek,
Im having a hard time turning it off~
But I think its Machined aluminum, built like a tank
at 50 lbs.I havent hooked up a T.T. yet and am looking forward to its Phono stage-What fun!

Glad it arrived in one piece Sluggo, and glad you are enjoying it as much as anticipated!

And looking forward to see some pics of your own ! :)

Thanks Kristof,
Im finally giving it a rest and have opened it up!
Massive torodial transformer.
And yes,A camera's in the near future!

Congrats Mark! That looks like one beast of an amp...

I think it's time to hook-up the TT, put on some Trower or Hendrix, crank the volume and be crushed.:music::thmbsp:

Thanks Dick,
Im still amazed it wasnt smashed with the air bags
and paper balls for defense.
I do have the LP of Bridge of Sighs for the morning.
Im letting the Deoxit dry overnight.
Man,It got a little Warm pushing the 4 ohm SDA-1A's
For the T.T. test run Im thinking 2 pairs of stacked
Advents. I'll have Good dreams tonight~

Congratulations on a very nice acquisition, and beating the odds to get it home safely in spite of poor packing. The old Sony receivers are very nice, indeed, if my STR-V6 is anything to judge by. [I think we discussed this in a previous thread. Yours is pretty similar, so it must sound good! :music:] Great value, since the label isn't as sought-after as some others of the period. Enjoy the new play-toy! :thmbsp::D

Thanks Fella's,
I want to thank Yamaha B-2 for the great sales
Brochure scans of the 7800SD & the STR-V7
he sent me(very nice of you Glenn)!
Hooked up a T.T. this morning to the stacked Advents
Great Phono stage,It sounds like this unit was Made
for playing records!
I also hooked up my AMC CD8A and my Nakamichi
Cr-1A cassette player with a BSR-3000 EQ in the
External adapter in/out.
The best speaker confiquration it likes so far to my ears,is to be A & B'd with my Ohm Acoustic D2's
and my Dynaco A-25's.
It has terminals for 3 pairs so that leaves the C setting for the 4 ohm Polk SDA-1A's(for Solo listening).
IMHO this receiver is worth it just for its Tuning section,The 125 watts it pushes, is just an added bonus.
Pic's to follow soon-Mark.

LOL yes, our vintage solid state gear WAS made to play LP records--and tune in the FM stereo, too!
Give me TOTL or give me something else

Congrats on a very fine pickup. I think Sony may be more consistent over a period of years in making 1st rate receivers than any other company (well, discounting Mc); at least from about the middle of the line up. I've been listening to Saturday Afternoon at the Opera on CBC on my STR6060 through the Wharfedale W70s this afternoon and it has been a bit o' heaven.

A few test pictures!

I got my new camera in the mail today and fiqured
Id post some pics of the Sony STR-7800SD~
(The camera will take some time getting used to,
So please bear with me)
Tomorrow in the morning light,I'll take a couple nudies and post them!
And thanks Brian,I like the taste in your equiptment also-Mark.

Beautiful receiver. I'm an especially big fan of the big toggles for the tape monitor functions. There's nothing like a big heavy switch.
