I was thinking of modifying the RSII cross over to biamp using a tube amp on the mid/highs. who's done x-over mods and what advice do you have?
Hello GannonAlex,
I also have a pair of Infinity RS-II’s and absolutely love them. I’ve performed a couple of mods on them and would be happy to share some of the things I found out on the way.
Splitting the cross-over out to allow for bi-amping is relatively straight forward and was pretty easy. I found this to be very worthwhile, ‘cause it allowed for more amplification flexibility and cost about me under $20 to do. I’ve played with different horizontal and vertical bi-amp set-ups, finally landing on a vertical set-up with two identical amplifiers.
I tried running a pair of modified Dynaco MKIII’s on the top end and while it sounded very good, I couldn’t get near the volume level that I was looking for. The Dynaco’s are 60w mono blocks and I can’t see spending any more for more powerful tube amps. Right now I’m very happy with SS amplification on these.
Here’s the jist of what I did; essentially I replaced the existing binding posts and added another pair below them, then rerouted the appropriate wires to the new set of binding posts. I studied the tech-sheet before I hacked anything up and used it as a reference while performing the surgery.
Another easy fix was to reduce the amount of polly-fill in each chamber. I found that one of my speakers was way over-stuffed and had 4x the amount of polly-fill in both the upper and lower chambers than the other speaker. When replacing the polly-fill, wad up small amounts, about the size of a baseball, and count how many you put back into each chamber. I found that 45 “balls” for each chamber worked very well in my room.
Another very inexpensive, but worthwhile upgrade is to replace the screws that hold in the woofers with 10-32 machine screws and T-nuts. I have since removed the woofers many times; this simple upgrade allows them to still sit very snugly.
Feel free to PM me I’ll provide you with all the gory details.
