Kenwood KR-8010, lights come on, no sound

t bone

amazing!!!!!
just got a good looking kenwood kr-8010, i can find 2 fuses on the main board, they are both good, i see the main contactor/relay thingie isnt engaging. (notice my command of electronic knowledge, which is zero)........any ideas?, guy says he will take it back but hell i dont want to go through the hassle of shipping it, thanks a ton have learned sooooooooooooo much on this board edit, i talked to the guy today, he said was working perfect when he shipped it and i do believe he is telling the truth, is it possible the power switch isnt fully engaging everything, or something i should look for that might have cracked or worked loose etc????, it did look like the box took a good shot, again thanks everyone

The common causes of "relay doesn't fire" are: (1) a significant offset voltage in one or both power amps due to component failure IN the amplifiers; (2) a failure in the protection circuit itself, usually an open "fast relay reopening" capacitor, intended to make the relay disconnect the speakers super fast when the set is turned off; (3) sometimes the problem of no relay action actually traces back to a failure in the regulated power supply, upsetting the "centering" of the power amps.

The above three causes cover about 90% of the possibilities.

I have an KR-8010 and it is a very nice receiver that is even a good competition for my SX-1250. That said, I remember being told by Echowars, when I first got it, that the output transistors/amps are unobtanium. If you have a real problem with outputs, you may be better off returning it because repair may become a real issue.

That said, it is known that Kenwoods from that era have now been showing up with power switch problems. This would be the first place I would look. Is the main power switch functioning?

power switch turns on the lights etc, just never hear the relay click on..........thanks t

thanks fred, methinks i made a bad deal buyin this one, live and learn...................t

I have one of these and I thought it was broken too but it was just that the tape selector switches were not in the middle position.
You never know, it could be that simple.
