anyone using a heathkit AG8 audio generator to test their amps?
I'd like to ask you some questions about it.
thanks.

questionS. but 1 is does it maintain constant amplitude output over 20-20K? another is did you calibrate it to your satisfaction? did the calibrate pot set 10v out without dancing all over the map?

ok, that helps. I don't recall working with that model of Heath sig gen but I can share some general observations on old gens:

- Linearizing across the bands: Constant amplitude: This was pretty normal but the techniques I saw used got pretty tedious. Many old sig gens had you go back and forth to each end of each band and adjust for equal amplitude. Some only did one band that the others fell into line with those adjustments. Others would have you actually 'knifing' the blades of the variable capacitor. That is, you'd have to grind them down to adjust the capacitance. Sort of a dead-end way of doing it.

Heath did more simplified ways for adjustments to keep them easier to do but likely traded off some improvement in performance specs to get it.

Has this Heath had the caps replaced in it? I'd suspect that out-of-tolerance parts may contribute to unpredictable behavior.

Cheers,

David

same with and without cap replacement. 1 calibrate pot in FB loop and a trimmer C for "nulling" . Uses 60 cycles and harmonics sort of as reference. tweeking the trimmer at 180 and checking at 60 and thats it. the calibrate pot is "touchy" to say the least but can be set to 10 volts out 200 cycles as required. its been cleaned. tubes test good. next stepp is power supply filter caps I gess.
