Finally a nice size Jazz haul!! I found a collection of Jazz LP's from the Franklin Mint. A total of 60 Red Vinyl LP's entitled "The Greatest Jazz Recordings of All Times". All LP's are new not a finger print or scratch like someone opened them and never played them all with original packing & advertising and musician / track brochures in each as shown in pictures. I played a few last night and the quality is very good. I also picked up 15 misc. LP's from the 50's & 60's in very good condition. I paid $1.60 per box / 4 LP's in each. 15 boxes total and 80 cents each for the others. $34 total :thmbsp:

I'm definitely going to be looking at those boxed sets a little closer from now on! They're obviously not all Reader's Digest or Time Life schmaltz... Best I've ever done is a Smithsonian Popular Music set for $1, which is an excellent set, but nothing like this. You could almost start your own Art of Jazz radio show :)

Nice haul for dirt cheap too!I noticed that most box sets I come across are in really clean condition.Have come across no jazz though. What kind of jazz in on those?I would think with that many it would cover the whole spectrum up to that point.

Great Find!
I have found the Franklin Mint "Kings of New Orleans Jazz" 4 LP box set, and wish I had more of those series.
Love that red vinyl...

Look at my first post and click on the bottom pictures and you will see some of the muscians names on the edge of the boxes. I haven't opened them all yet. The box I did listen to entitled Great Jazz Inventors has one LP of all Monk, one LP of all Mingus and two full LP's of Miles. Each box has it's own theme set. I have 15 boxes (60 LP's) of a possible 25 boxes (100 LP's). I was lucky they had that many there. Bob :thmbsp:

The red vinyl is beautiful!! :thmbsp:

"Kings of New Orleans Jazz" 4 LP box set must be one of the missing sets. I'll send you my address and you can ship it to me!! :D

Now you need to play them on a $5000 turntable, $2000 cartridge, thru a $$$$ tube amp. Ahh- maybe not.

Well, it wouldn't hurt, if you pick out the equipment carefully and set it up right. That stuff is GOOOD!!

Whether you consider it worth the asking price is another story.

Another one to keep an eye out for - RCA produced a set in the mid 80s, in mono, for Time-Life. I think there are 29 boxes in that set - some are themed, some are all one artist. The job RCA did restoring the tracks from 78 and other media for transfer to good-quality vinyl is superb, and they showed admirable restraint in staying away from fake stereo. I found 12 or so of them in a Goodwill, boxes tattered but vinyl dead mint. Excellent stuff.

Wow! I never look at the box sets. But that's all changed. About a month after this score I found 11 boxes (red vinyl) SEALED of Franklin Mint's "The Greatest Recordings of the Big Band Era" at another GW!!! I'm not a huge Big Band fan but they were only priced at 4 bucks a box. I took them to the register and she told me they were Half Off!! WTF!! I never heard of either series in my life and I score both!!
