Greatest Lead Singer

If you had to choose a favorite (or a few favorite) lead singers, who would you choose, and why?

I'd have to choose Eric Burdon. His bad-ass attitude just oozes through the speakers. Leonard Cohen is a close second. If the man says something, you listen. Aretha Franklin on the female side.

a lot of those r&b singers like burdon could really belt a tune. i dig van morrison, he sort of falls into that catagory, at least on his older stuff. check out the bang masters if you wanna hear what i'm talkin' bout!

Just for old-times sake I'm gonna throw out my high-school favorite: Paul Rodgers.

He's certainly a candidate for the Timex award for lead singers. Okay, Robert Plant probably gets one, too.

Lead Singers

Jim Morrison,Robert Plant, and my personal favorite,Ronnie Van Zant....
But as we all know, there are many great lead singers in rock,Male and Female.

David Bowie, not only does he have a great voice, he is a great songwriter, innovator and musician.

Freddie Mercury. What a presence, and what a showman.

Also rate Geddy Lee high up there. That will sound odd to those who haven't listened to much (or any) post '70's Rush, but his voice matured nicely over the decades. Very nicely. Starting in the 80's he became more and more able to invoke a tender and emotive depth that conveyed Neil's lyrics of the same nature perfectly. He, iow, has a nice range and the subtleties and nuances in inflection that come with it.

For Rock its Klaus Meine, simply because of his raw power and his ability to go from earth shaking force to an amazing soft voice in a fraction of a second

For Jazz it has to be Tony Bennett or Frank Sinatra, Frank for his style and the sheer magnitude of his amazing resume Tony, because he puts so much feeling into a song like Ella did

Best female is obviously Ella but I want to mention Billie Holiday for her unique style and gut wrenching performances

Peter Gabriel. Great singer and writer.
Justin Hayward from the Moody Blues.
Paul McCartney had a beautiful tenor voice and he could really scream when he wanted to. Still not too bad at 70!
John Lennon, same as McCartney.
Roy Orbisson. Nobody has a voice like his anymore.
For Female:
