The Who at the Superbowl

vintage rules!
I thought they sounded pretty good.Pete had lots of windmills and Roger sounded good for almost 70. I loved that stage and the light show.I had my doubts but they pulled it off nicely.

They pulled it off, more or less. I agree the light show was impressive.

Having said that, there is inevitably a bit of sadness to them. Obviously, when half of your members are gone, you feel the ongoing absence. Roger cannot hit those notes the way he used to. They were hyped with a lot of vintage clips, the light show, and their classic logos. I think Pete and Roger should tone it down, change the name to Daltrey-Townsend, and do more low key shows.

But what sells sells.

I'm sorry, I didn't think much of their performance. It felt old and tired. Like seeing my parents' generation still grooving on Count Basie in the 70s. I agree, missing half the group does hurt. But they're running out of classic rock bands to do half time shows.

Zak Starkey Cymbals were really cool. I thought they did pretty well. Although neither of them have it like they used to. Buy hey there almost 70.

Daltrey's almost 66, Pete's pushing 65, but they actually were better than I expected.
They are one group I've never seen, and after watching the show last night, I regretted it. Not so much for what they do now, but for what they did back in the day.

Roger looked a bit stiff, but Pete looked pretty good; he's lost a ton of weight too as I recall him being pretty big a while back.

And the music is still killer

I didn't like it at all. If Townshend and Daltrey want to do something new, that is fine but they shouldn't call themselves the Who. But to have them make fools of themselves is pathetic, especially for a band that as young men sang "hope I die before I get old."

I was wondering if it was just me when in the middle of the show my wife said to me, this is awful. And it was. I wonder how much of the performance was piped in.

And the medley approach didn't work at all.

Zak Starkey is a great drummer! I thought that he is perfect for them. And yes, the "target" cymbals were pretty cool!

My wife said they sounded fine, all while I was rolling around on the floor in agony, covering my ears.

The measure of a good band (and musicianship in general) is how well they play live. These guys are not what they used to be. If they had replaced R and P with nameless twentysomethings and had them *cover* The Who, it would have been better.

Anybody catch Gretchen Wilson a year or so ago when she sang "Barracuda" on that VH1 show? She nailed it, made Heart look silly. That's what I mean.

We love these songs, and it takes young people in their prime to get the energy up and good musicianship to keep it tight.

Daltrey was totally lip synching that crap - no up close shots of him, mic placement and breathing was wrong on several occasions. Pete's vox and playing seemed to be live tho. Overall a horrible performance, imo.

Wardrobe Malfunction

I had to say, while they were on, that there would be no wardrobe malfunctions during this show.

Actually, Pete kept moving a part of his coat that was getting in the way of his guitar. Several times he had mis fired chords go completely silent where they should have been giant whole note power chords.
I thought that the other guitarist's parts where missing in the mix, and overall, the vocals where way too loud.
The drummer did a good job.

who are we to nit pic and complain they did ok. Respect all your opinions but could'nt disagree any stonger.

Drummer is Ringo's son Zak ... he's been with them a while and does quite well (but he ain't Keiff!)
Pete was ripping off some good riffs now and then, but it was like he was potted down on the mixing console
for a good part of the show - tho "... his long coat kept getting in the way ..."
THAT explains it and makes a lot of sense!
Not their best gig, but nice to see them working again ...
Still, its a long time since those two were in their 20 and 30s ...

For a GOOD Who show check out the DVD - The Who - Live at Kilburn (1977)

Pete's brother was the other guitar player last night.

I just read this on the LA Times:

"After the game, the Who's brief set will be available for purchase on the video game Rock Band, allowing you to play the part of arena rock star. The Who, after all, shouldn't have all the fun pretending."

Forgot to turn the TV on around halftime. Now it looks like I didn't miss anything. Maybe they should hangup the towel on rocking out and go acoustic. They were decent at the press conference last week.

Too bad the younger generation doesn't have any classical rock bands to replace the dinosaurs with. In ten years, most of these bands are going to be pushing into their '70s. I know there are some quality younger bands out there, but none that I've seen that can play good solid rock like "Won't Get Fooled Again" or "Baba O'Riley." The music landscape has changed too much.
