Sony CDP-101 with some problems
I would like to revive my CDP-101. I have bought that new in 1984 and run it for several years until I replaced it with a Sony X333ES.
I think the CDP-101 has problems with the laser pickup. I tried some adjustments as described in the service manual. Still there is a problem with reading a complete disk. Partly it´s working, but latest the 2. track starts the problem again. I have googled for a pickup replacement, but it seems that this type (KSS-100A) is no more avalable. Is that right? Does anybody have a idea what to do? Agger

I'd just like to pick up this 6 month old thread to tell you that now its fixed!
I replaced the focus + tracking servo hybrid with two 3 amp power operational amplifiers (L165 from ST). Except that the pinning is not matching its working good! I need to add 2 small capacitors to dampen the amps, seems that they are faster than the hybrid and start to oscillate. First I wanted to reuse the original heatsink. But it gets very hot, so I decided to spend a bigger heatsink that was cutted out of a piece of aluminium from a window sill which I found in my basement. Look to the pictures how everything fits together.

Good work! I guess many dead 101s need that mod to work again instead of a new laser...
I'll ad link to this page from TVK's CDP-101's page

One thing that we can state from seeing the insides of the CDP-101 is that the electronics of a TT/TA/phono-preamp are certainly less complex than those of a CDP/SACDP/DVD-A. |

Nice going, Agger! I didn't think anyone had one of these still running after all these years! I admire your ability to "make do" and substitute something newer to keep it going!

Thanks! Yes I want to keep it alive, because I spent a whole lot of money in 1984 as I bought it new. The last 10 years it was stored away because of the focus problem and I didn't want to dup it. I thought the picup was the problem.
Then in the last monthes I read somewhere that a guy had replaced the focus hybrid with 2 power opamps and I thought this is worth to try. The L195 replacements are also no new stuff, well known parts since years. Total cost : $3

YB2,
the CDP-101 is in the D.A.D. section, like the 701ES and 5000S: http://www.thevintageknob.org/DAD/DAD-main.html it is grand time btw that I update these posts - good reminder.

Awesome! I read many moons ago that those parts were unobtanium. Good to know the unit can still be fixed.
These CDP-101s are marvels of engineering. The relay driven "feather touch" metal pads are unique. Never seen them in other gear. You can hear a nice "click" every time you press them. Cool! I wish I had kept mine. I still have the Billy Joel CD which is officially the first title ever issued in October 1982.

agger,
this is from an old post about your cdp-111. I think my cdp-111 is dead especifically the kss-100a. It will not read any disc and the tray comes out. is it really the laser or something else? how much to share your service manual? I live in CA USA

Hi,
mine is a CDP-101 not a 111. I don't know if they use similar electronics inside. I have some scans of the interesting part of the schematic which I can send to you. Scanning the whole thing would be a big task. It is binded together and has many folded pages.

Well, if it does not read any discs and the tray comes out, do you think adjusting the small pots on the laser may solve the problem? The laser pickup units are KSS-100A and they are available for $280!!!

Does the CDP-101 have the same laser KSS-100A?
