JBL L50s v 4311b trade?

My buddy has a set of 4311Bs he bought new back in the 1970s.

One of the woofers is split, there is about a 2 inch tear in it, it looks like it got kicked in. Also the front grill is broken . . . .

I have right here a good set of 2213Hs woofers . . . would it be a fair trade to give him my pristine original L50s for his 4311Bs?

What do you guys think?

It's probably a good trade. I was just kidding around. I L50s, and like them... they would look nice together, perhaps make a good front and rear set.

I'd trade. the 4311b is a better speaker in my opinion. I believe the L50 was more of their budget series.

The L50's are fairly well balanced and play pretty well for their size. The 4311's are based on the L100 type design (4311 an evolution of the 4310) so they may have a bit more of the exaggerated bass bloom, and edgier midrange/treble. The mids and tweeters are pretty comparable in terms of type and construction. The difference is the L50 woofer is smaller (10 inch vs 12 inch) and a little lower on the construction quality but still sounds very good and somewhat more repairable (123/2213 recone kits very expensive). Some like the accuracy of the L50 better, may need a bit of subwoofer to cover everything. the 4311 also doesn't really go super low either.

The only answer really is for you to have your friend bring them over, replace the damaged woofers with yours (actually swap them both out if they are a reasonably matched pair), and then play them with volume levels matched (as the louder one will usually sound "better").

Then you and he can decide which sounds better in your system and you can make an informed decision.
