HPM-100 -vs- ADS L-810
any HPM-100 owners in the Seattle\Tacoma area want to have a round of speaker wars against my ADS L-810's? my instinct tells me the HPM's cant hang with the 810's.

Now that sounds like a "fun" proposition dingus !
If I were closer, I'd go a round or two... It will be interesting hearing the results if ya get any takers. Good Luck. <insert ear plugs, now>

Now c'mon Dingus that's just not fair! LOL!
At least disconnect one of the ADS woofers to give the HPM a chance! ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' "note to HPM fans I have some and use them" |

I have owned a lot of ADS speakers, but I've never heard the 810s. I have heard HPM 100s, and I own HPM 60s.
I would guess that the HPMs might sound better with "flea" amps, might be a bit more efficient. That being said, I bet the 810s would take the cake with the proper ammount of watts! Hope you get a chance to do your experiment, I'd love to read about the results! |

They have different sound, which is "better" depends on what you want to hear. You're going to hear the bass more emphasized on the HPMs, and the Pioneers are going to be more efficient.
If you have unlimited power, the ADS's would be hard to beat. They have a beautiful clear sound with incredible highs. I had a pair for 20 years and they matched well with a Hafler DH-100. |

I think Charivari still has his 100's and lives semi close to you.

Yeah, I live about 3 hours away, but it'd be difficult to figure schedules seeing how busy I tend to be on weekends.
In regards to one of the other posts, the HPMs do do decently well on the little Sonic Impacts. For the trip down to the Portland meet back in December, I had a pair of HPM-40s buckled into the jump seats of my extended cab S-10 and ran them off of a T-amp and a borrowed iPod. After dropping the HF level pot and stacking a couple of coats properly between them to keep the HF glare of the passenger side HPM from deafening me in my right ear, they worked surprisingly well in the function. I'd imagine HPM-100s would work quite well in a similar situation. - JP

Having said that, I don't think it's much of a contest. I could be biased, as I own the l810s and not the HPM 100s. To my ears, the l810s went deeper, and had a more open sound than the Pioneers. Anybody else from that get together care to comment? Ed

i have 3 receivers of varying wattage and a T-Amp that could be shuffled through in order to get a better overall result, plus whatever the challenger has. i do think the deck is stacked against the HPM's, but it would be a lot of fun regardless. |

Well, I'm going to have to make it there sometime to pick up an Infinity Quantum 2 cabinet to mirror-image my pair, so I'll make it a point to get down there the same weekend.
Soon, hopefully. - JP
