Ruths Chris?

The first time I ate in one in Baton Rouge in the early 80's, Ruth's was not a large chain restaurant- there may have been 3, 4 at the most. Over the years, I've eaten at maybe 10 others as they expanded around the country. The quality of the food and service has remained consistently high, IME.

Can one eat cheaper elsewhere? Of course. But, not everyone always WANTS to eat cheaper. For some, occasionally there are more important activities than squeezing nickels.

Dang Toze your going to shame me into knockin the cobwebs off my wallet.:D

Its one of my favorites. Well worth the money. But I gotta ask why you did not look at the prices before ordering to know what your bill would be a head of time.

Well, I did. And I figured it was "just this once, so what the heck?"

Don't get me wrong, I not breakin bad on the restaruant, I'm just sayin' it's great----if you can afford it.

Dread

I am assuming you went to the only one in town here. My wife has been bugging me about going there but cost was always a consideration. I prefer the Rio Bravo downstairs from that steakhouse. you can get a great meal for 4 there at half the price 2 dine up at the RC.

Sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like you got some great co-workers.

Yeah, that would be the one. I'll have to try Rio Bravo one of these days.

Thank You, and Yes I do.

Well.. we all have our priorities I guess Dread... I couldn't bring myself to pay for the high end gear you have listed in your sig, but don't have a problem with a 2 or $300 dinner every now and than... go figure huh?

I can make a better steak at home, and get a better cut from the local butcher. I wasn't impressed with my Ruths' Chris experience and I don't plan on visiting one again.

Probably the worst part of the experience was the fact that the waiter wouldn't leave us the hell alone and kept babbling up anecdotes and history lessons about Ruth's Chris. I wasn't on a tour of the Zoo, I was out for a rather expensive dinner.

I like what I refer to as 'invisible service'. That is, the waiter or waitress is there when you need them, they don't fuss or play cute--they give you excellent service and then disappear...yet are seemingly right there when you need them.

My wife and I are both excellent cooks and do well with a grill. It's primarily the service that sends us out to eat...and for what we were paying, an obtrusive waitperson pretty much ruined things. The steak was nothing to write home about, either, and I am highly suspicious of the cut.

Well said, I whole-heartedly concur.

Prolly why I went ahead with the meal despite the price. But it will most likely be a long time before I go back---because of the price. (If that makes any sense.)

True dat, Simi.

I have been to several and they are pretty consistent. The best I've been to is near Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The fresh crab meat cocktail followed by the filet is outstanding!
And yes since everything is ala carte it can get rather pricey!

Jim

We have a couple around here.. Good steaks, but I have had better, such as Old Hickory Steakhouse. You think Ruth's Chris is expensive, try an Old Hickory. (They are an exclusive restaurant to Gaylord Hotels) You can easily double the bill you paid for two people. I find it is worth it though. Insanely great aged steaks, and killer service. You get what you pay for... Hopefully will be visiting one before long..

I went to a seminar at the Gaylord Texan about a month ago, and the Old Hickory Steakhouse was much, much better than Ruth's Chris.

I have no problem with paying for a good dining experience, but I'm very picky about what I consider to be good.

Amen.

That was the same Gaylord I ate at. We have one here in DC that is about 15 or 20 miles so we're talking about getting a steak there soon. Man was that steak at the Texan FANTASTIC.. I got the dry aged, and then some really great blue cheese off their cheese cart.. UN REAL...

After dinner, we headed over to the Glass Cactus to see the Spindoctors.. What a great evening that was all the way around.. not cheap at all.. but it was well worth it..

The one in Memphis is excellent. They served one of the better NY Strips I've eaten. Service was superlative.

I've been to 3 of the best steakhouses in Portland--Ruth's Chris, Morton's, and El Gaucho. El Gaucho was the best, hands down. Ruth's Chris was on the bottom, mainly because my steak was so overdone, admittedly easy to do when I order mine 'blue'. Still, for the price they of all people should know how to do a steak blue.
