Thank you! I love the 2A3, 45 and even the triode'd 46 but there's something special about the 171A that's not easy to put into words.

Mono - can we talk mono?

I have no experience with the P68/68H, which seem to be the less deluxe models - same motor but simpler main bearing, the platter and chassis also don't look as massive. Yes, I've seen those posts. ;) FWIW, the brake fluid trick worked on the idler wheel of my "motor unit-style" Mark 7.

Classic NOS DAC based on a TDA1541 with passive I/V and 6SN7 output

I never got notified about this post. I'm glad I chanced upon it today. Great job! I'm glad you found the project worthwhile. After I got a taste of an all tube analog output section, I could never go back to op-amps or solid-state in the signal path. After almost 4 years, mine...

It's running on its original idler wheel. You mean P58H? They're pretty much on equal footing.

Help with Step Up Transformer Choice

Although I have a friend whose set up has enough gain for the SPU Synergy/15095, I've never had success with 1:10 with any of my classic SPUs, only with the DL103. I think the Scott 272's phono stage is a typical active RIAA EQ in the NFB loop circuit like the classic Dyna PAS which tend to...

Help with Step Up Transformer Choice

Congrats! I wouldn't be too hasty in unloading all of them. I suggest keeping at least a pair for "voicing" in your hifi set up. I actually prefer them as a 1:10 MC step up with the DL103 (over the 4722 at 1:20) with phono preamps using passive RIAA EQ. IME, they don't work as well with classic...

CD player with nice analog sound.

Magnavox/Philips TDA1541 CDPs are on top of my list. But don't overlook the entry-level models like the CDB492/CD2000 which used the TDA1543 DAC, which is the budget Philips multibit DAC chip. I prefer these non-oversampling models (especially with simple mods) to the Sony PS1 SCPH1001.
