I have an Xtension 10 and have no desire to upgrade. It’s relatively pricey at $5k without cartridge, rather mundane looking, but it weighs a ton and is dead silent.

He’s going to need something like SONOS. The SONOS speakers of his choice plus the SONOS Port to act as the interface with his vintage receiver. Not going to be cheap though.

I’m running L/R stereo REL subs with my Merlin TSM’s and the sound is fantastic, way better than a single sub.

Enjoy your Node and save up for your DAC upgrade as I don’t think $200 is going to get you any type of upgrade. The Node is considered to have a pretty decent DAC and I think you’ll need to start around $500 to get something that is going to sound better.

What about dropping the cd and going for streaming? Something along the lines of SONOS would fit the bill for space constraints and streaming would give her pretty much unlimited listening options.

Try both speakers so as to eliminate a bad speaker (doubtful). Is right side dead with all sources? You could try using some contact cleaner on all the controls, if no cleaner just work controls back and forth and that usually helps a little. If right channel still dead then move on and chalk it...

Could you have it connected incorrectly? A lot of subwoofer high level connections are of an in/out configuration. You take your main speaker leads to the subwoofer, then out of the subwoofer to the speakers.
