    Thanx for the compliment Jimmy.

    6V6 Marconi amp

Thatch, The 6V6 has some physical size to shed heat but remember a few P-P 6BQ5 amps really pushed the tubes to the limit. I can think of the Eico HF-12 from the brief time I had one, and the Heathkit EA-3's I have now were on the edge too and had to be tamed.

    6V6 Marconi amp

In the bogus PMPO rating system used by today's amplified computer speakers manufacturers your's would be about 500 or more watts per channel. :D The real RMS wattage will vary depending on how high the B+ voltage in the amp is set at from the factory and other factors including the max...

    My first toob purchase!

Sovtek 6L6WXT The factory spec sheet on the amp Thor bought is overly optimistic in the published power output spec. I have tested this amp and put my own real power rating of 18-20 watts/ch on it. Very respectable for the output tubes supplied since they also sound fabulous! Doing some...

Hows this for a starter tube amp ??

It was a copy of the Dynaco ST-70 by Jolida (SJ502A) with 6550 output tubes. Used. Went for $619.00. Here is a pic from the auction. There are lots of nice P-P new tube amps in this price range to choose from. I suspect that one would have been loud but not as musical as can be had for the...

    Western Electric Tubes

If my memory serves me correctly the 396A is the preferred 'roll-in' for those gorgeous Shanling tubed CD players and also the SACD version. Man I'd love to have a Shanling SACD player.

    6V6 Marconi amp

You know, there are soooo many people in this world that would be sooooo jealous to see how some of us in the know can have sooooo much fun for just $15 or $20 in equipment expenditure knowing what to spend it on! :boink: I share your excitement Greg!

    6V6 Marconi amp

Let it run like this for at least 4 hours then swap in a 100 watt lamp and run for another 4 hours. At that point you can power it directly. With the 100 watt lamp the set will get more voltage and AM sensitivity and power output will be improved.

    6V6 Marconi amp

Bolly, Great news. That 5U4 doesn't glow very bright at normal power. I'm not surprised you cannot see filament light yet. The fact that the radio is playing means the 5U4 is working. If You cannot hear any AC hum all is well!

    6V6 Marconi amp

Bolly, That is a really nice vintage console and the single ended 6V6 amp should sound good, just like a SE 6BQ5. Is there any way you can rewire a junk table lamp or lamp socket so as to place a 40 watt domestic light bulb in electrical series with the power cord to this set? By operating...

New found- Heathkit AA100 int and tuner

Don, Why there are wires connected to the RCA outputs marked AM and FM audio out on the tuner is a puzzle but I am quite certain that you can pull them and forget about them. They only apply to monaural use of the tuner. Take the multiplex output from the tuner as said by others, run it to...

Just for fun, can you guess what this is?

Well I guess that rules out any kind of realistic particle beam weapon. :D

    Exceptional, but inscrutable

Bauhausler, I do see a lot of work in that project and I certainly respect the builder for a job well done. I just disagreed with you only in that my impression of the piece is not art but IMO rather straightforeward utilitarian amplifier design. Putting some nice wood around the base...

    Exceptional, but inscrutable

Here is the picture. I personally don't see anything artistic about this design except that the tennis ball tubes look cool, but to each their own.

    Ugly tube preamp's and amp's

Don, It was House de Kris who introduced my amp into this thread. I guess he thinks it yalifies. Regarding that Audio Innovations amp. I already commented how I might change it but looking at it as is, don't you think it look authentically retro? Color and all!?

    Ugly tube preamp's and amp's

No worry Mike, Not a problem as I see it. It is true that Don had some strong opinions about why he though my appearance design was incorrect in my other post where I introduced it. I guess I made that connection (to Don's opinion) here after someone else re-introduced my amp in this 'ugly...

    SACD and McIntosh

I plan to join the SACD following as soon as I can afford to. As for DVD audio. When I learned that you cannot play DVD audio discs in a standard DVD player I thought that was kind of stupid.

    Ugly tube preamp's and amp's

Well I agree that the large round footer shares a 'look' with BPC, but BPC needs all the help it can get right!? :D Ever see a foot on BPC that was 'real'? Everything about BPC is crap, or if it isn't crap it is fake. The footers on my offering and on the Wavac are real. In my case I machine...

    Ugly tube preamp's and amp's

Carl, I also enjoy the bare exposed tube look on many amps. I do think this one looks better though with the cover in place. The feet are polished solid T-6061 aircraft aluminum. There is a mix of polished mirror and gold plating in this piece and the footers would work in silver as now or...

    Ugly tube preamp's and amp's

CarlIV, I have an interlock system so that my amp cannot power on with the cover removed. I have two beloved housecats and this amp currently sits on the floor between my speakers. With 1,550 VDC inside there I wouldn't be able to turn my back on this thing responsibly without the safety...

    Ugly tube preamp's and amp's

Don, I think heavy amps like my 805SET and the Wavac need large footers to prevent damage to the surface you are setting the amp onto. I can imagine how deep cones would push into a wooden tabletop with 30 lbs or more pressure concentrated on each one over time! These amps weigh over 100...

    6V6 Marconi amp

Bolly, For someone who was recently aspiring to build a tube amp this would be a cheap and worthwhile education! I'd buy it if it were local to me!

Hazardous driving today I don't know about the drive to Windsor from Toronto but where I am the roads had closures and I saw vehicles in the ditch. Not a good day to be on the road. I sure hope there were no accidents involving AK'ers! I though this doo was next weekend. Did I miss it?
