Well there is a speaker inside, so can you open it up? Maybe bypass Sonos circuitry. Of course you need a amplified signal.

I would go with new drivers that fit the criteria. New drivers will have real world reviews. Going with something because it's "vintage", leaves you guessing. Unless the driver was popular and you can find reviews of it.

Adding a super tweeter would bring out the highs.

Japan has great speakers from what I've read. TAD, Diatone but since they are only sold in Japan, you don't get to hear them.

Nothing special, part of a cheap system. Mated with a tube amp, might be good low level jazz.
