I have an MCI JH110 tape machine I am restoring, that has over 30 tantulum caps around the board. I’ve been told a few different opinions about how I should approach replacing all of the old caps.
I had one tape enthusiast tell me that I should not replace tantulum caps with aluminum electrolytics, because aluminum electrolytic caps have a too small ESR which would cause any regulators in the unit to become unstable. The same person also said that tantalum caps may have a unique impedance vs frequncy curve that no other cap will provide.
I had a whole different group tell me that, all tantalum caps should be replaced with aluminum electrolytics because they are prone to shorting. All the caps on my board are over 40 years old.
