Unfortunately I tried simply pulling that socket off and it won't budge- I was afraid of pulling too hard and actually pulling the stilt pins off the board or otherwise damaging it.

I don't believe there are any broken pin pieces stuck in the sockets on the main board-- when I bought the player the upsampler board was completely loose inside the unit, when I opened it up and inspected it I found that those pins were still intact but bent-- if I remember...
One more photo showing the broken pins on the upsampler board. Doing a little research, it appears I may be able to simply order another 22-pin socket "end piece" like the one shown, de-solder those long stilt pins from this socket and solder the new one on, and be good to go.
