Thanks - so failing capacitors would potentially (a) create the thump and (b) cause DC at the output? I can replace all of the electrolytic caps if this is the likely culprit.

I've recently installed a pair of 301 IV in my kitchen/great room. They do a fine job of filling the space with sound, especially backed up by a subwoofer. I think they're about perfect for ambient (ie non-critical-listening) setups.
