I assume you're referencing the frequency range, which Infinity spec'd as +/- 4db. But that doesn't "add" up to 8 db. That just means that the speaker plays the frequencies listed within a 4db limit. So for instance, the frequency range is listed as 22-28k hz, so Infinity says it will reach down...

    walsh tweeter design/rebuild

You're welcome. Just know that a refurbished pair of Walsh drivers will set you back about $350, more than the speakers are worth. I suggest browsing your local Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for vintage speakers, then come back here to research what you've found. Or, if you don't want to...

Monitor IIa are good speakers certainly not in the “junk” class at all, but honestly, you only own the cabinets at this point. It’s going to cost you far more to purchase the right drivers to make them whole than the speakers are worth. I hate to say it, but I’ve had multiple sets of Infinities...

Very nice! Huge improvement over the original vinyl.

    Infinity Column II ?s

Are you talking about the doped bottom woofer? It doesn’t deteriorate. And it’s impossible to replicate. Infinity hand tuned them with it.

    Infinity Column II ?s

If they have replacement woofers, then yes. Stay away. Column II are nice speakers. But you’ve already got nice speakers.

    Infinity Column II ?s

I'm a big fan of the Column II, but they're not better than B&W Matrix 802 Series 3. And don't even touch them if their woofers have been replaced. The bottom woofers are specially doped and can't easily be replicated. I don't have any experience with the Beethoven you've referenced, so can't say.

Polk SDA 2B Studio - good speakers?

Your ax596 is a pretty powerful amp and is rated down to 2 ohm, which is good. It's probably fine. Maybe borrow a dedicated amp from someone to try out, or try a tube amp on them if you have a chance. 25-50 wpc tube amps usually sound great on SDAs.

Interesting. I have a beautiful pair of original WTLC and I don't find them to be sloppy in build quality at all. Of course the cabinets are made from the 70s pressboard material that was common for that period, but all seams are tight and everything is installed in a professional manner. It...

Looking for a smaller Infinity than my QLS

The WTLC is one of the coolest Infinity speakers and sounds great, but it's not in the same league sound-wise as the QLS. And I own a fully restored pair of WTLC. If I was downsizing from QLS, I would be looking at Quantum 2 or Quantum 3 since they share sound signatures. Ren 80 or 90 are good...

    Infinity Reference 5

You're referring to the Polydome. Excellent midrange driver, but as you mention, it degrades over time and needs to be rebuilt. You can buy a set of fully functioning Kappa 6.1 for the same price as a decent set of polydomes. If I were you I'd just keep my eyes open for a set of 6.1 in good...

    Infinity Reference 5

I've compared the Kappa 5.1 to the Reference Five directly. The Reference Five sounds slightly better. Kappa 5.1s are nice speakers, especially for their size. They're what I would call a large bookshelf speaker. They're comparable to the Reference Four. They have the same set of drivers...

"Change nirvana". I like that. Great way to think about that pesky issue.

What kind of glue for Polk speaker magnets?

I prefer Loctite Powergrab. It's cheap, readily available, easy to apply, dries clear, and you can use it for a million other things around the house.

    Thoughts on Quantum 3's?

Too bad. The Quantum 3s are certainly a better speaker than the HPMs or L100s. Might be a tossup with the Cornwalls, depending on preference. I'd take the Quantums myself. But I understand issues on timing and already having enough speakers. I've had to pass up some very nice deals just to keep...
