    AR XA mystery

Yeah, doesn’t immediately make sense to me either. @Hose53 mentioned above that it could be a mismatched sub platter and T-Bar. That T-Bar isn’t bent by chance? Or is there any evidence that someone has monkeyed with the spring assemblies? The more I think about it (if I understand your...

    AR XA mystery

I an having a little trouble picturing what you are experiencing. Any easy way to take a couple of pictures? The standard XA sub platter has a rounded bearing at the bottom of the spindle. Then there is a Delrin thrust plate at the bottom of the well. After a good amount of use, the Delrin plate...

    EPI M150 / GENESIS II......

Boy, I would be hard pressed to mess with the M150s. I rebuilt/restored a pair. I replaced the one cap, cleaned and reoiled the cabs and verified all the speakers specs. The brass and walnut cabs are beautiful. Rumor has it that those cabinets were manufactured by a coffin company.

sonic frontiers SFL-1 service manual anyone?

Yeah, I would contact PartsConnexion. A couple of the original Sonic Frotiers partners were running that company. I have had several conversations (years ago) WIth Chris Johnson who was one of the originals. Ha I was typing at the same time you were @spantou01

AR XA platter mat, Jake's deerskin or Vinyl Nirvana cork/rubber?

I am with you @DavidTT. Having had the pleasure of living close to Marc and spending a fair amount of “unfiltered” time with him, I will say that from my experience Marc never made flippant or unfounded recommendations. He did tons of research and trial and error experiments regarding AR...

    My old Dad's beloved amp

Nice. Does that model run in full class A operation? If so I bet it generates a fair amount of heat. Very cool that your father was the original owner

Acoustic Research AR XB problem (with video)

Sorry, late to the party. Yes the spring adjustment ought to address your issue, the platter was riding too low. You want to try to adjust the springs so you get an even bounce across the three points. Regarding that bottom panel…..leave it off. Our friend Marc Morin always removed them as he...

    Sonic Frontiers SFL-1 tube choice

I loved that preamp. The nicest tube I used according to my ears was a Dutch Amperex 6201 with the pinched glass waist. It was wonderful in that SFL-1

    My latest AR-XA

Hard to say for sure, but I think you truly do have a Frankenarm assembly. It looks like you have an XA brass pivot barrel, and XB exterior pivot assembly. The XA arms do have the long set screw in the bottom of the assembly and fits into the notch on the AR arm tube. The XB pivot assembly uses...

    Tube kit recommendations

Well, I am back to the drawing board. I contacted Quicksilver to get their thoughts on their integrated amp (20/channel, four el84 per channel) would drive my speakers. Mike Sanders replied that his integrated would not be a good match. So I think I am off the el84 path, and thinking el34 as a...

    Tube kit recommendations

Yes I would like to get close to 30 watts per channel. I fully expect to need 4 EL84 per channel. Quicksilver builds a tube integrated with 4 per channel, but it is only rated at 20/channel. I was wondering if the ST-35 could be set up as a mono amp, and use two to get close to 30 a side. I...

Checking with VTA to see if they would create a mono version of the ST-35. No idea how complicated that would be. ~30 watts of EL84 power would be about perfect for me.

    Tube kit recommendations

I really think I prefer the sound of the EL84 tube. My problem is my Narbeth speakers are 85-86 dB efficient. But they are an easy load. I have a smallish room and I listen at moderate levels. But I don’t want to underpower the speakers right from the start. VTA and ANK seems ro be two outlets...
