Very nice. So what's the difference between the W70E and W70D?

I'm guessing, w70Domestic and w70Export. just a guess.

As far as I know there were no Wharfedales in the UK with the sand filled panels, It was probably cheaper to ship them to the USA and then add sand.

I answered my own question. I think the E is for economy. Here's a picture of the W70 (not D) and it has another speaker. The D's may have five as my memory is coming back to me.

Hi Rick,

FANTASTIC deal! Man, to think that I paid 20 times as much for a pair of Wharfedale W 90's (still thinks I a good deal). Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy those 70's.

Regards,
SixCats!

I think the "E" was just a model change and the last model in the W70 line. It went to a 3 way design and acoustic suspension with a larger woofer. The drivers are all the same, but I think one speaker was in a sunny location and the drivers were bleached out. I have the grilles with excellent cloth, but it looks like the shop where I got them broke the masonite
All of the drivers work, but the speakers are not as efficient as I had hoped. It is probably due to the sealed design, my little 10-12wpc tube amp would only play them to a very moderate level.

The E is a later version. There are at least 70, 70C, 70D and 70E in the line. A friend has the 70D in nice shape, but it was not a $10 steal.

Careful buying those by the pound unless in the UK as the back panel is sand filled, running the price up, and causing that hernia. Well they are not that bad.

W70's

My W70's look a bit different with unadorned slab wood, a rectangular apeture for the midrange and one of the tweeters is a bit different.

The mids are wired directly to the amp - so you don't want to blast these things with a big SS amp. I had both mids reconed and swapped out the xover caps - they're very smooth.

Talked to Wharfedale about spares at one point - the factory burned and they're got nothing - not even specs.

They do have sand laminated into the wood - at least the backs

I have got good news and bad news about the W70's. GOOD NEWS FIRST- I hooked them up to my Stromberg-Carlson Stereo 60 and freakin magic took place, the extra 35 or 40watts opened them up. I put on Paul Simon-Graceland and was really truly stunned at the sound. I guess I never knew how true BASS sounded before these guys! The whole sound experience was amazing, I was hearing stuff that I had never heard in the recording before. The bad news is that I will not get to bring them into the house due to WAF, and she IS more important than the best dang speakers I have heard in years.

Duffinator,

The W70D does have 4 drivers & mine look like your pic - except the tweeter & 5" mid positions are reversed. And mine have the drivers mounted on the front of the baffle. The W70D was built for a few years & likely had running changes during that time. Also, a lot of Wharfedales were sold by Radio People Ltd out of Hong Kong to US service guys during Vietnam. I think it is likely they were built from Wharfedale kits (either complete or just drivers) out in Hong Kong.

If the W70E cabinet is the same size as my W70D it looks like the woofer is a 15" where mine is a shrimpy 12".:D I know Wharfedale had a 3-way Rosedale model with a 15" woof.

rickon66 - stash those Wharfies with a buddy you trust & work on the wife.

Tom

Yes, the E replaced the D and the tweeter was a different fried egg unit though I've seen some Ds with the E tweeter but, robably these were replacements as the D tweeter was prone to both glue separation and US owners tended to fry them.

Your Es have the D cabinet. The slab sided cabinet was earlier and used in the W70. I've not seen any literature that would suggest the cabinet styles were options offered at the same time. Also, there was the cabinets made in Asia that show up frequently in the US b/c of the # of units bought by service personnel.

It may be possibly that the BIC units were kitted in the UK and shipped to the US where BIC contracted locally for the cabinets to get around the customs and duties. US speaker manufacturers did this when selling into Europe, Whafedale into Japan and Bozak into Canada.

Seems odd they did not offer the sand filed cabinets in the UK as they were offered in the US and build under license in the Asian market.

It looks to me that the woofer and midrange drivers in the right speaker have been reconed at one time. :scratch2:

I noticed that the surround on the right speaker faces out where the left one faces in.

They do look like original drivers tho...

Still, $10 for a pair of W70e is a great score anyway you look at it! :thmbsp:
