About to start working on my EICO HF-85...

Hi all,

I am about to start tearing into my HF-85 preamp and was looking for information on modifications/improvements to the preamp while it is in surgery.

I have queried HF-85 restorations/mods and such but have only found references to posts, not info or posts themselves on the actual improvements or the reasoning behind them.

I may be a poor searcher, but if someone can point me toward restoration tips and recommended changes to this preamp...I would be very appreciative.

Also, if anybody has and suggestions on fixing up a pair of HF-32's and an HFT-92, I would be even more appriciative.

Thanks.

I had a lot of success using Richard's mods from the Yahoo Eico group, though it may be long gone. If so, pm me. I also replaced the power supply with film caps, that seemed to make a marked difference. Great preamp, wish I still had it...

I had a chance to audition an 85 for a couple of weeks that was an excellent preamp. It had been totally rebuilt with Auricaps. Although part of the reason it sounded so good was that it had all vintage Bugle Boy long plate 12ax7. Those tubes go for about a hundred bucks each nowadays. I guess, if everything in the circuit is good, using excellent coupling caps would have positive sonic results. I rebuilt mine with Sprague VitaminQ that was many years ago. I have not used it in a long time since i have moved on to a no frills preamp with 6sn7 tubes.

If you operate it with the bottom cover off, don't worry about the hum - it'll disappear when screwed back together...
