Altec Lansing 215 Carbon Fibre: Anyone used these?

Hello,

I recently have found some Altec Lansing 215 (not to be confused with the computer speakers) for sale in my area for $80. They look pretty good to me, but I can't find any info online about these. I'm wondering if anyone here has used them, or knows anything about them. I'd like to have a good quality set of floorstanding speakers to add to my small mid-fi bookshelf speakers.

Thanks in advance!

Sansui...~!

What is that CD player? Teac VRDS-8?

Might be a Pioneer Stable platter I wish they still made those, Great sounding.

Speakers look dam cool. I've had good luck with Carbon Fiber coned speakers.

Have a pair of 3" Carbon fiber mids and the performance is really good.

Those are probably from the Sparkomatic Altec Lansing era, or maybe later. I don't believe they are classic Altecs, and some will dump on them simply because of that, but they likely are perfectly fine speakers. Tastes differ, and most makers have made good speakers and have also made turkeys, so listening is really the only important guide.
But do not pay any premium for the Altec name - pay what you would pay for a no name speaker of the same sound quality.

Good advice! I was wondering if they were from the Sparkomatic era. I did a one-off review saying that they were very neutral and "soft sounding" but I just wanted to know if anyone here can back up that claim. Maybe I'll wait for something more well-known.

Hmmm... Most of the people who have heard them who posted to an old thread here about them thought they were bright sounding with solid state electronics and early CDs. There were also comments about relative inefficiency, which seems to track with the thoughts of a poster who sold them (so knew them well) and thought they sounded good but weren't great in larger rooms.
