Best venue for selling high end cassette deck

Audiogon is the biggest marketplace for high end gear. But I don't know how much interest an Akai deck would get there - there are always a number of Nakamichis on there, and often a Revox or two, and they take some time to sell unless very well priced. Even the nicest Akais are usually considered a level or two below the better Naks and Revoxes.

Of course, you could always become a member here, and sell it in the members section. Failing that, I'd try eBay. In any case, except for the best Naks, Revoxes and Tandbergs, cassette decks don't usually go for very much these days, no matter how nice they are. I've seen middle of the line Nakamichis in decent shape go for under $100.

Hello Bob, and thanks for your advice. My Akai is "Like new, low miles and is the top of the line" but it ain't a Nak.........It does make some sweet recordings though.....Thanks again, Chuck

A tough question. Cassette decks are a tough sell these days unless they're a well-known, highly regarded TOTL model.

Might give Barter Town or the AK Classifieds a shot )might be an Akai fan or two here) otherwise, I'm with Bob. Try Audiogon.

"That auction site" is probably your best bet for the widest audience.

Not to denigrate your deck, but only the top end Nakamichi, Tandberg and Revox get close to "stoopid money".

Not saying your deck isn't a decent one, but unless you find an Akai fan that just "Has to Have it", don't get your hopes up too high.

Yeah - someone on that site is smoking the pipe bigtime trying to get silly money for a GX-F91. Sure it was a great deck (perhaps even better performing than the one being discussed) but it ain't worth over twice what it cost back then.

There's another piper selling a GX-9 for stoopid money too. What's with the looney Akai hoarders? Nice decks sure (still love my GX-F51) but not exactly an investment vehicle...

Unless it's top of the line and I'm not that familiar with Akai you could search ebay for similar models and what they sold for.

I just want to know why, with all these "Dragonslayers" running around, we aren't all constantly tripping over Dragon corpses...

P.S. perry, you don't get to respond to that :-P

I don't agree that eBay is too "generic" for high end items. I've seen lots of high end stuff sold there and I'm not talking just audio.

I think you will do fine on the Bay. Items that usually go for more money are often well documented and have plenty of hi-res closeup pictures with details on the condition of the face, cabinet and transport. Internal shots are also good.

If you are worried that your prized piece may only top out at a really low price you can set a reserve. But also remember that if the starting price is set too high it won't get a lot of attention. Auctions for prime gear that start out super low get lots of attention and usually do pretty well. Good luck.

It seems I end up with all the 'Dragon Coprses" :tears:
But then I send 'em to perry and he brings 'em back to life. :music:

Selling AKAI 'R99

Hello and thanks to everyone for your comments and info. My Akai will never have the wide collector appeal that the Nakamichi, Tandberg and Revox decks enjoy, but it does have low miles (played a Christmas music tape every year since 1989)

Thanks again-Chuck

PS Marc-it's silver

One just sold for $400 on eBay. I'd say it'd do fine there. Before I eBay something I usually try Bartertown and Craigslist for a while, though. Saves a lot of hassle.
