Carver 6250? Worth an upgrade?

Here’s my current setup:
Carver 6250
Music Hall 2.1. Ortofon Blue
Large Advents

I love all the 70s rock. Dylan, Neil Young, also love Wilco and all kinds of other stuff like New Wave and John Denver....

I talked to the guy who sold me the carver (flea market dealer) he is big on marantz. I see good things posted here and all over the web on marantz as well. There are two 2216 B s available on CL near me, but the prices are close to 300 bucks. I could swing that, but am curious if it’s worth it? How much better will it sound? I also have a pioneer sx 450. Its a bit richer and warmer than the carver, but then the carver is clearer and louder. The 450 has a sticky volume control that frustrates the crap out of me! I’ve also heard great things about sansui. Few of those around me .....
I’d love to hear any thoughts. Is the Carver worth upgrading ?

I have both the Carver 6250 and the Marantz 2216B. The Carver is driving a stacked pair of Frazier Black Box II's, along with a pair of Rectilinear III's. Previously it had been driving a stacked pair of Advents. To my ears, at least, the sound was great. At 125 watts per side, and the ability to handle low impedance loads, it has been a reliable workhorse for about 20 years now. The Marantz is driving a pair of Original Large Advents. At 16 watts per channel, the Marantz is capable of driving them nicely, but at higher volumes, things can get a bit congested. The main drawback to the Marantz, at least for me, is that there is no mono button. I consider this essential when listening to mono LPs.
As for your question, "How much better will it sound?", I can't answer that.........only your ears can.
Personally, I wouldn't spend $300 just to find out. Good luck on your quest. :-)
 
I have 6250 somewhere in my storage. It's a fine receiver but mine sounded somewhat boring without a noticeable characteristic. I thought it probably needed a recap, but didn't find time for it. If you're curious about Marantz sound, in place of your Carver, 2216 may not be a good way to find out. If you can get 250 or 250M, jump on it. It will make your Advents sing and pound like never before. I've also used 2270 to push Advents and AR speakers before with good results.

A 2245 just came up on Craigslist, about an hour away from me for 275$. It’s got a black face plate, which must’ve been some type of add on. Is it worth the drive and the dough? Appreciate any feedback / insight !
