Awesome AK member.
Hey, anyone know anything about cerwin vega se (special edition) series? There is a pair of 280 se's with 12" woofers for sale in my area. I think they are from the mid-80's but I cant find much info on them. Anyone have experience with them?? :scratch2:

I can tell you that the 380SE's were our undisputed, kick butt, hard rock demo speakers back in the late 80's.:guitar: They would be among my first choices for a rock speaker. They fell flat on their faces however when used for classical and other types of music.

Heavy, solid cabinets. I'm sure the 280SE's are similar.

Perfect cuz i listen to rock and nothing else. the 280se has a 12 inch woofer so im guessin the 380se has a 15 inch woofer. what i found interasting is the 280se's are 6 ohm which is perfect because my amp puts out 110 wpc @ 6 ohm:banana:

300SEs

I've heard of Cerwin Vega 300SEs, but never 280SEs, until today. Specs on the 300SEs (which also have 12" woofers) are:

Power Rating: 255 Watts
Maximum Output: 121 dB
Nominal Impendance: 6 Ohms
Frequency Range: 25Hz-20kHz

I wonder what the differences are. I couldn't find any specs on the 280 SEs.

I think the 280se's are from a different year
the specs are the same for them.

280SE specs

Where did you find specs for the 280SEs? I looked all over the place. Could you post all the specs here? I'm interested in the rest of them, now.

Thanks.

lol it was an ad which is gone now. but in the next week im buying a pair from a friend when i get them ill tell ya the specs and how awesome they are.

I have a pair of SE's. They are vintage '80 style. Black velvet on the front baffle. Cheesy red stripe on the grille. Tacky. The cabinet is heavy and looks good, but that are still CV particle board with vinyl. The mid and tweeter are a different type than the standard DX fare. I do not know what that means.

Sounds like a plan VegaBass!:thmbsp: I wonder if the model designation denotes woofer size in mm? 280mm=12"? Yes, the 380SE had at least 15" woofers, if not 18". 380mm=15"?

CV woofers

The 280, 300 and 380 designations are definitely woofer size in mm. Same as the RE series. The 30s are 12", the 38s are 15" woofers.

11" Woofer?

Actually, that does equate to 11.0 inches. :scratch2:

For some reason, I think it's still a 12". That's no guarantee, though. :nono:

hey guys I am a Cerwin Vega Fan and had almost bought a pair of 380SE's a few years ago, but the price just jumped waaay out of my reach. I have a pair of special D-9's i bought new in 1987, rated at 425 Watts, 4-8 ohms, 102dB @ 1w/1m. I used them for DJing for many years before retiring them to storage. I refoamed them 5 years ago. They came from the factory with the tweeters wired reverse phase, I wired them in phase after I blew the original pair of tweeters at a party, I was still able to get new original ones from CV at the time. Under the advisement of the CV tech i talked to, he told me to wire the tweeters in phase and they will sound more clear & precise. he said the early D-9's had a problem overheating the bullet tweets and them going bad before the circuit protector or fuse could protect it, so wiring it in phase will protect it plus make it sound better. He was very much right. They haven't quit since I turned them way up many times after that. They are very very loud with any type of music, classical included. I recently ran into a CV technician who used to service them and he said the early D-9's are the ones to look for because they have the same VC as the earthquake subs used in the movie "earthquake" and do not roll off below 40Hz. I have always loved them beasts for their versatility & performance despite them being so heavy I didn't mind carting them to functions in the least. I also bought a pair of E-312's new and they have been in their original boxes since the day I bought them 1999. I also own a pair of E-715 that can bark almost as mean as my D-9's.

Which speakers to try for...?

Yep, there's certainly something about those D-9s that seem to keep up with their successors. The D-9s were rated at 350 watts, with an SPL (1w/1m) of 101 dB. Most later models were rated at 400 watts, with SPLs rated at 102 dB (1w/1m). Yet the D-9s seem to keep up. I've been seriously thinking about adding a pair of D-9s to my collection, but still skeptical. It's been a few years since I listened to a pair. Are they rated at 4 Ohms? Might be worth looking into, to pair with a set of 380SEs. I'd also like to try a set of M-100s. The MX-400s are said to have a sensitivity of 105 dB (1w/1m), but that's somethiing I'd have to hear next to AT-15's 102 dB to believe. :scratch2:

I appear to have strayed a little off-topic here, so I'll quit this line of posting.
