Dual 521 turntable

Greetings and salutations. I recently purchased a dual 521 tt because the price was right, it looked cool, and all functions worked. My initial test combined w/the ride home unleashed the 40 y/o grease-turned-tree-sap and things started going wonky..I cleaned it up, lubed it, fabricated a stueuerpimpel (made in U.S. of imported parts) from an ink pen, etc.. Now the thing will switch speeds from 33 to 45 just fine, but doesn't switch from 45 to 33. There is a little flipper piece (see pics) that won't fully flip over to allow the belt track to switch, it flips over easily with a little help. I lubed the part, and there is no noticeable friction stopping it, it just won't slide fully over, and no solution comes to mind..suggestions?

Some Duals have that malady as I've observed. It is a quirk, as I've seen it on my tt (refurbished). I have the CS 1246, in which I believe the 521 is a descendant of it, as both platters look identical from 3'-0" apart and to a novice. What I did in my case was to shut the unit off, re-start and then switch back to 33. It worked, but at first it was a little whacky. Bottom line is that the tt should eventually switch speeds properly. I can go from 33 to 45 easily with no problems; It seems that 45 to 33 is a large step for my tt to do.

I had the same problem with a 521. I swapped the belt for one of a different height and it worked fine. It's been a few years since I did that so I don't recall if I used a taller or shorter one. My guess is shorter.

And let us not forget the wonderful Vario-pulley system, [and a slew of model #840 motors] to round out this wonderful design.

I did use a replacement belt which is very thin. Looking at the path of the belt, it appears the belt could make contact with the tip of that lever and help it along, if the belt had a little more thickness. It's a shot in the dark, but worth a try. I'll try the original belt (pretty stretched) and see what happens.

Look on ebay, as I've seen them advertise replacement belts a lot. Not sure if the belts are original parts or aftermarket.

Seth: *lol* Well, what would you rather do - free the bloody conical spreader piece or diagnose and repair a Thorens TD280 or TD318/318/320 two-phase-generator board, that's acting up (and those Thorenses don't even offer a true, user-acessible pitch control...)? ;)

Grinnings from Munich!
