Empire Cartridge?

Your OP4 and my 300Z came with the same stylus, the S44E (clear gray-green), a 2x7 elliptical, so not entry level at all, but in fact the second-best elliptical, with a tapered cantilever. The lesser ones have "safety" wires (to sustain higher VTFs), straightsided cantilevers and higher effective moving mass.

There are aftermarket line-contact styli for not-very-scary money, and several more ellipticals as well. The 241 and 242 series pictured at TTN will all fit. [UPDATE: They may fit, but be aware that there are a few chances of a slight mismatch. For example, a NOS S44E stylus will sound bright/extra-sparkly way up top in an LTD 500 or 600 LAC or a 500 ID body because those bodies have ~half the inductance of most models you'll encounter. However, if we're talking aftermarket, all bets are off. Those could be voiced for either body inductance or something in between or even beyond.]

EDIT: Doug G.'s recommendation coming along in a couple of posts is a good one, with specs identical to the S44E. The trick now is finding these styli as NOS.

They do make shibatas.... and shibatas are line contact!

depends which model though - you need to know the cross-fits.

bye for now

I haven't looked for a while, but the last I checked a fine elliptical was the best thing JICO offered in an Empire stylus.

LP Gear has a line contact stylus (currently $80 + ship) that will fit the Chunkies, but we don't know who makes it. People who've tried it like it, but ymmv and all that.

I have an Empire OP 4 "Chunkie" with a green stylus, that only sounds so-so. Even though it sort of lacks detail, it plays clean and tracks great. It must've been an entry-level cartridge of it's era. I have seen the shibata replacement stylus that should physically fit that body. Wonder how that would sound...

Find a red 400TC stylus to put on that OP4 and it will sound fabulous.

I just grabbed a table that had an empire 245e cart. I'll look at it closer when I get home, but the reviews I've found on my phone are favorable.

I have an Empire 245e cartridge that came on an '80's JVC TT I picked up cheap at a thrift. I ordered an NOS Empire stylus from Carol on EBay. She still had some last I checked. While I have found this cart and stylus a bit bright on my Yamaha it sounds very good indeed on the JVC and and my Garrard table.
