Floorstanders that are not heavy

Were there any floorstanding speakers that don't weigh much? I'm not talking about the cheaper low-end floor speakers made by Yorx,GPX,SD,and lloyds.

They at least have to have to be 1 way or 3 way.

I just picked up some DCM Time Windows (original version, 1's, I think) at a thrift for $10.00. They're between three and four feet tall and don't weigh much at all. The cabinet is made of some type of round cardboard tube. Two mids and two tweets in each set on an angled baffle. Ports at the bottom. They sound freakin' unbelievable. Great bass, very open. They've replaced my AR-90s and AR 2AXs in my small listening area. Check 'em out!

I have a pair of Celestion 11 three-ways that don't weigh much in comparison to, say, a pair of Infinity RSa's or JBL 4312s. Good luck finding a pair, though. I've never seen them on eBay, but 3's and 5's are common, and 7's and 9's pop up now and again. I don't think too many were made in the first place.

And yeah, how heavy is 'heavy'? Are you going to put them on stands, or something?

I mean dont weigh over 20-30 pounds for both speakers...

15lbs for a three-way floorstander? It could be difficult to find something good in that 'weight class'. Some of the low-end Technics three-way jobs might be okay. Kinda Kabuki, but a friend of mine got a pair from a garage sale, and they're halfway decent. I forget the exact model number, but it doesn't matter much. They're all about the same. Bass-reflex, 12" woofer, cone mid, crappy sibilant tweeter. Any high-quality floorstanding/large 'bookshelf' speaker is going to have a pretty heavy cabinet, there's just no way around that.

If you want good sound you usually need to step up in weight. In general more weight means better sound, though not always. If you are not interested in good sound, then just pick up whatever lightweight speaker you happen to find in the thrifts.

Is there a reason you want light. There are many smaller bookshelf speakers that are both light and good sounding, but smaller than a floorstander. These could be put on stands. Read the boards to get an idea of the better sounding ones and then start your search.

I think what we have here is a difference in engineering? Most speaker companies make boxes. To stop a flat surface from flexing, it either needs a lot of bracing, or thick dead material that is stiff enough to counter the forces being applied.

Sounds like the Time Windows are tubes, or modified tubes. They will be more rigid than a flat surface box. Next issue is making them sit still with a vibrating piston working within the structure. As long as they are well enough secured, it should not matter about the weight? I do agree that costly usually includes weight as customers probably associate weight with value.

The Timewindows are a fantastic sounding speaker. Mine get played every day at work and my son can't wait to get them into his room.

I also agree that weight is a fairly good indicator of box quality at the least.

Now I understand wha speakers I have missed out on because of this. :tears: I saw a pair of Fisher large bookshelf speakers bu they were $32.00 each at a thrift when I was out of town they had a pair of essx design speakers but he foams were rotten around the woofer so I left them and got some component by KLH.

The TDL RTL 2 seems to fit you're bill; it is a 2 way floor stander at about 12kg per speaker. It won What Hi-Fi's best in class award in 1993 with 5 stars; I have a few reviews if interested.

But it depends where you live, I don't think that many where exported to the US. They do pop up on the UK e-pay quite often.

Why?

You going to put them in the trunk of your car? lol.

Evan

Have you considered some nice monitors and stands?

I saw a large technics bookshelf speaker but there was only one! who buys just one speaker? :screwy:

Unless you mean a new speaker, the most likely story is the other one is wrecked beyond usability. I've found no less than three sets of speakers in the past couple of months that I had an eye to restore that were in radically different shape: only one usable woofer per pair, one crossover that was all fudged up, stuff like that.
