Harmon Kardon H/K930 Guru?

Hey Guys,

I just picked up a very nice looking H/K 930 today and was almost shocked at how nice a condition it is, cosmetically maybe a 9 plus!
I also have a H/K 630 that plays, but it has a few issues and probably not worth what it might cost to spruce it up.
The new "to me" 930, on the other had looks like it will be worth bringing back to top notch performance.
After playing it a bit tonight on my Cornwalls, the 930 seems to be working fine, sounding pretty good but I have to think after 35 plus years could use a once over.
At the very least, a tuner alignment and check/repair the solder joints.

Who are the go 2 guys for overhauling these great receivers?

I know Terry Dewick is one of the "Mac Guys", is there a SS H/K guy that would be comparable?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I have played a bit more with the 930 and The one thing that I have noticed is that the tuner does not work as well as my beat up 630.
The 930 seems to draw in a strong signal and locks into stereo well, but on most stations is very noisy in stereo.
Deactivating the Auto Stereo button makes the sound almost dead quite, but obviously in mono.
Does this sound like it just needs a proper tuner alignment or is there perhaps something else that needs attention?

Sorry, no answers here, but I sure do like the look of mine. Post a pic.

What are you using for and FM antenna?

Hey avionic,

I am using a Magnum Dynalab ST-1 antenna that is mounted outside on the peek of my roof.
This is the same antenna setup that I have used to great success with the 630, and previous TU-919, and MD-102.

chicks,

Very nice looking unit! :thmbsp:

About a couple of months ago I passed on a local wood cased 930 that I was very tempted to grab but the seller was a little too pricey for me.
He wanted $xxx, I offered him $yyy.. I think it sold after about 2 weeks for somewhere in between.
The one I picked up on Friday cost me a couple and cosmetically it is very close to mint.

I will see if I can get a couple pics taken.

$550 seems high. But discussing value will get this thread banished to D&S...

Ya chicks, I just may go back and edit those dollar signs out of that last post.

I took a few pics but all my close up shots did not come out very well, maybe some taken out in the outdoor light might be better.

Here are a few pics of my new H/K930.
Obviously photography is not my strong suite.

What is a strong signal? Does it advance more than 3/4s of the strength meter?
Dose the lamp indicate Stereo when tuning meter is centered and at the strongest reception?
Is it noisy mostly in the lower or higher frequency stations?
Does the MPX filter make any difference?

Have you already cleaned all the switches and pots using the Deoxit tutorial in General Audio as a checklist?

Next would be to check out the Tuner cleaning sticky in Tuners.

Cleaning, moving it to a different location, and antenna is something easily done by the user. Beyond that if it needs a tuneup/alignment that is best done by a tech.

Maybe even try a simple 3-4 foot wire or pair of rabbit ears you can easily adjust and move around to compare.

+1 on that - sometimes if you have a good antenna, it will pick up noise and your tuner just amplifies it. Are you splitting the antenna cable for your other receivers? That can degrade the signal as well. What is the signal meter giving you? If it's strong and you are getting noise, I'd be looking at your antenna before sending it off for service. Now that's not to say it wouldn't benefit from a re-cap at this age.

Cheers,

Bob

Most stations that I would expect to be strong are, with the meter showing at "8" or so.

Yes, the Stereo lights up as you would expect.

...
"Maybe" a little noisier at 91.1 vs 94.1 and the MPX is very subtle with it's effect.

My initial thoughts were to sent it to a Good tech guy to give it a good once over... clean controls and switches align the tuner, check bad solder joints, replace any bad caps resisters, etc.

I was hoping that some of you H/K guys might recommend the tech guys that would be the best to send this baby off to?

Hey Kent,

Terry was the very first guy I thought of but knowing his main passion is the Mac gear, I was not sure how keen he might be to work on the H/K.

Thanks, I will go ahead and send him an email and see what he says.

One of our members has a Cit.II being serviced by Terry. :thmbsp:
