JBL 2404H Help, can I replace diaphragm myself ?

Speaker Fan

proud owner of Altec 19's
I recently purchased two JBL 2404H tweeters for my 4628B Cabaret cabinets.
Finally found a somewhat affordable pair of these are "baby butt" VHF drivers that command so much money on the auction sites these days.

Problem is that one arrived working and other was DOA, no damage just not working at all.

My question(s)...
- Is it most likely the diaphragm?
- Can I easily replace the diaphragm at home?
- How do I replace them?

I have recently replaced diaphragms on my Altec 19's which were easy but these have one screw in the back and 4 allen keys near the front... what do I do here?

You guys have been great and I hope you can come through again :thmbsp:

It replaces from the front, after removal of the horn and phase plug, the latter removed with the screw in the back.

You can do it at home, but there's some delicate soldering involved. It'll go smoothest if you clean the solder terminals with a solder sucker or solder braid before installing the new diaphragm.

Clean the gap thoroughly per standard compression driver procedure.

When installing the diaphragm, manipulate the foil leads into the solder terminals with a plastic tweezer or toothpick; no ferrous tools in the magnet zone, thank you.

Also, when reinstalling the phase plug, hold it securely when tightening the screw from the rear. If it rotates when nearly tight, it can twist the diaphragm and you get to buy a new one.

The horn needs to be on to run a final sweep, since it clamps the outer perimeter of the diaphragm....

Wow, much more difficult than diaphragms on my Altec 19's, they were a breeze.
Guess I will contact seller to see if he wants the one back and then look for a single one.
Thanks Zilch for the reply, I have seen your posts here before and you seem to know you stuff.

Diaphragms are $106 for 2405 type with extended UHF response, or $110 for the more rugged 2402 type, originally used in 2404H-1 drivers for 4628B.

Parts list says use 2405 type, but that means checking what's in your "good" one, because the response IS different....

Done...

Never got back to Zilch to say thanks on this one (oops).
I did replace these myself and it was not too bad... you gotta be real careful.

Thanks for your help
