I cant find out much about these subs...anyone have these or heard them?

I want to find a pair of subs to supplement my 250 & 240Ti's with the very low of the lows.

Yeah your probably right...its strange that you can buy them everywhere but nobody has any reviews of them. While I would love to have the JBL B380 or B460 subs..I just cant afford them even if I could find them. I may have to check to see if I can build a pair of subs with the spare LE14H-3's I have...but I dont know if they will go low enough. Other than that maybe one large or two smaller subs from SVS or Rythmik.

I'll add the Synthesis to the list...thx. I thought for music and occasional movies a sealed sub would be better??...but the B460's were ported so??? :dunno:

I would not get too hung up on ported vs sealed. Choose a quality sub or two from a maker who knows subs (like SVS, HSU, Velodyne, etc) and cross them over very low (under 50hz) and you will be very happy.

Go cheap and you will hear them stand out with sloppy bass. Get quality subs and they will blend no matter who makes them.

Thanks jblnut....I am considering a pair of Rythmik LVX12's or HSU VTF-3 MK5 HP's...and leaning more for the HSU's.

Good plan! I was also going to add one more bit of advice, but it may not be one you want to hear. Every (and I mean every) traditional sub I have owned (with an integrated plate amp) has died over the last 20 years. The idea of putting an amp into a device with a huge vibration generator is not a good idea in my book. I have since converted all of my subs to passive, keeping the driver in place, but powering them with an external amp and xover.

You may want to consider the warranty of the new sub you buy (NEVER buy one with a 1 year warranty) as a deciding factor in this.

jblnut

Well that explains the "Warranty 7-years on Woofer, 2-years on Electronics"...I was wondering why it wasnt the other way around...but that makes sense. I thought maybe it was because of heat. So you just leave the plate amp in and punch through your own connections? I guess I can use them until the warranty runs out and be on the lookout for an amp and crossover...or would it be less costly in the long run to look for passives now? I'll have to research that. Thanks jblnut....dammit.. you know it takes me a year of researching and comparing to even buy a toaster let alone this!!:rflmao:

How about this...can the plate amp be removed and isolated from the cab to begin with? Voiding warranty of course. I cant even find passive subs...everything is powered.

Yes there are plenty of folks who do this and instructions all over the web. You'll need to fab up a piece of metal or wood to block the hole left behind when the plate amp is removed, as well as finding a safe place to put the plate amp.

I just use old pro amps (like Carver, Yamaha, etc) for this duty once the plate amp dies and they seem to work out well. Finding an external crossover takes a bit more doing, but there are plenty out there. I use Audio Arts (cheap vintage analog) and DBX DriveRack (modern digital) units.

Since we're in the Lansing forum, my best sub uses the amazing JBL SUB1500 driver that was originally part of a $3k Revel sub. Part Express blew out a bunch of NOS drivers about 15 years back and the folks like me over at audioheritage.org jumped on the deal. I put mine into an old 8 cu/ft bass cab I used from my band days. Powered with a bridged Yamaha PC2002M, I can re-arrange internal organs at 20ft :). It's stupid overkill for my room, but "there's no kill like overkill" I always say :).

Keep your eyes open and - you never know - and when you see what you want, buy it QUICKLY!

The JBL B-380 and B460s do not have plate Amps - you need a standalone amp to run them.

I got a B380 maybe 8 years back. Nice box with a 15: driver. I saw it in DC-Craigslist - the seller had bought it when Tower Records went away.
He'd fixed a bad surround when he bought it, and - it was going again and he wanted to be done with it.
I used an old Harman Kardon Citation power amp I had, bridged it to MONO and it puts out 500-600 watts. Perfect
I got rid of the B380 when I found a JBL Pro 4641 sub - UGLY big black box with an 18 inch speaker in it.
Love the sound but hid it under a cloth so it was not seen. Still used the Mono power amp.
I had wanted a B460 for 15 years or so and fell into an opportunity via Bartertown on AK. I am near DC and saw someone in Florida was selling a B460,
and kept knocking the price down month after month. It got to a point I was considering driving down to get it, but someone here was moving from Florida to DC
and everything fell into place.
Even found a buyer for the JBL pro speaker for a price we both liked - and - I still use the HK amp to run the B460.
And - I just KNEW I could never afford a B460 ...

That I could do...and maybe a small enclosure with a fan for the amp.

I just realized I will need to connect to speaker B of one of the R117's for a sub since I have one R117 driving my 240's and one driving the 250's. For some reason I was thinking just plug in to the pre-out of the slave 117 but that wont be functional or have volume control. Speaker level inputs on a plate amp doesnt draw what a regular speaker would right..more like a pair of headphones?

Looks like I'm late to that party...nice drivers. Like I said I do have a perfect pair of LE14H-3's but I really want to keep those as backups for the Ti's.

:rflmao:My internal organ need to be rearranged!!

Wow..Tower Records...havent heard that name for some time. I lived in the northern suburbs of DC (Wheaton/Rockville/Germantown) and we had Peaches Records...every Friday paycheck and made a run to Peaches that night.

I do love the looks of the B460..but I do want a pair of whatever I get. I dont know about the stereo separation argument for subs..but it seems logical to me. But yeah I have had my eyes open and check BT religiously...although being on a fixed income I cant get too crazy. :dunno:

18" sub...did you have to nail the cloth down to keep it from blowing away? :rflmao:

If you have LE14H-3's just sitting in a box, you might want to research the JBL (Synthesis) and Revel subs that use a 14" driver, and then keep a watch out for someone selling one because the plate amp died. Then you'll have even more spares, as well as a good starting point in terms of an enclosure. Spares are more fun put to work :-)

I made a nice grill for the 4645C I acquired in nearly new condition for not much money, so Big & Ugly can be mediated a bit with those.
I haven't actually mic'd it yet, but in it's new central location it seems to go deeper than the 2216ND1 in my L200, which does an honest 25hz.
Yah, it's HUGE....but boy does it perform. Considered swapping out the 2242 in there with a 2269, but the cost is just nuts.
But, If I were buying new, and could afford it, I'd look closely at the subs with motion controlled feedback sensing - just seems like the right way to go for smaller cabinets (I'll never forget the Phillips motional feedback speakers I heard in the 70s!).

@jblnut ...I was checking to see if there was any plans to build a pair of Citation 7.4's...but me and wood never got along...I worked metal all my life. I know..it bugs me too with those 20 pounders just sitting idle.

@nedseg ...I could deal with big and ugly given the right opportunity. $1200 for one driver alone..yeah I would be out too. Motion controlled...are you talking about the servo type subs? I have wondered if that makes the music more "mechanical" for lack of better terms...same with the aluminum cones.

I was researching servo subs - and not liking the investment required for '< 100hz of bandpass' - nor the 'thousands of voices' yelling 'buy this one, or That one, or this one!" - and had been looking into buying or building a B460 when I came across Heathers' posts about her 4641, and shortly afterwards came across a nearly unused 4565C on CL for less than $400, so the choice was obvious, esp with great pricing at the time on the Crown 1502 XLS amps - total investment less than $700.
The 4645C seller told me I was the only one who was willing to deal with the size, and show up with a truck to haul it...and had been on CL for I think a good year before I came across it....so good deals can be had, with a bit of luck.
(For a very brief time I had one heck of a truck subwoofer!)
Aesthetically, yah, I'd prefer a B460, though I suspect the 45C outperforms it ... and couldn't find one in a price range I could manage at the time.

But, had I been more space constrained, or more wallet free, I sure would have hunted down some servo subs to listen to.
It just seems to me, with such fast electronics today, that controlling the woofer cone's behavior by measuring it should only reduce any of the typical 'large driver' ill effects...esp if overdriven.
And, Philips did it - analog!- 'back in the day', and I was amazed at how nice the deep bass on those tiny speakers was...and still remember it.

As well as a few threads about it here on AK.

Whether it would sound better or worse in today's subs, I don't know, but would certainly want to find out myself....the space savings are impressive.

What I can say from experience is that the 4645C sure seems to do 20hz pretty effectively (I have it crossed at 25hz & 50hz, and may narrow that after more measurements!), and has a 'musicality' (?) and such Power & Slam! to it that is hard to believe....literally house shaking.

Also, since I'm driving the 2216ND woofers with a Bryston amp, I have wondered if a 'cleaner' subwoofer amp would be noticeably better or cleaner sounding - the 2216ND is crazy clean & precise, and also very deep...might experiment with swapping those amps someday....

Some big freight trains climb a shallow grade a few miles from my house, and more than once I've gotten up to see what was making the subwoofer 'rumble' like that - but found it was off. Also does a good imitation of asphalt/street surface grinder/removers a few blocks away.

Anyway, happy budgeting, wallet watching and tape measuring - I sure don't regret it!!

PS. I've noticed that super deep bass in recordings gets dramatically better and better, starting sometime in the 90s...it's really weird to hear stuff you never knew was there before...and also makes most rips from LPs unlistenable due to the very audible rumble in most of the ones I have.
(I haven't actually played an LP since I got the sub....but is on my 'gotta try it' list.) There is a lot of electronica out there that seems to be Made for Big Subs!!
