Just wanted to post some pics of my Empire

Sorry guys. I bought it this way, so I can't answer your questions. I'll be happy to take higher res pictures if you need them. The arm sits on a 2.5" by 2.5" by .5" square of aluminum that is screwed to the right rear corner of the plinth above the original oval shaped arm hole. There appears to be one hole through the aluminum square that the arm fits in.

Glad to hear I could sub in a better arm.

I have a Jelco 750D on my Empire, and it was a very good fit.
Several options for good arms on that table.

You can use a wide variety of arms as long as you realize you'll need to fabricate some kind of armboard to hide the old mounting holes. I just have a piece if 1/4" poplar stained to match the plinth.

My Audiomods arm is the same mounting distance as any of the Regas, as it uses the tone arm tube from a 250. VTA adjustment is a big plus. I wish I had gotten VTA on the fly feature in hindsight.

I also have a Jelco on another table which is a very good value IMHO. Damping makes them very versatile as far as cart selection.

I have a Linn Ittok on mine which is as close to a drop-in replacement as you can get (as are all Linn arms). No armboard and very little machining required...

It should look better with the new counter weight to match the table. I think it would make the tonearm look like it belongs there.
Personally, I think those Rega arms look like they belong on anything I see them on!

(...) I would like to use metal or plastic. Any ideas?
You can get small squares of sheet metal at most hardware stores. I bought a package of 6"x8" aluminum sheets that were packaged as flashing. Something like this:

You'd have to have a way to cut it real clean and smooth any barbs etc off the cut. But it's cheap enough to play with.

This seller below may be able to cut these aluminum round bars to the 5/8" thickness you need Pootybear. If not there are a few others to check out. Great job on the 208-it looks sweet! If you take your time with a stepped bit and get it clamped good, it might come out nice. There is a clear acrylic extension available on ebay too.

The printer covers that this site has are tall enough to not put pressure on the tonearm if anybody is looking for a cover.

I was able to enlarge the stock hole on mine and mount the SME shown below with a 7mm spacer. The Empire 98 tonearm sounded excellent too with a Denon DL103 before I drilled the top plate.

Thanks mmr24. It's just painted now, but when I do get an armboard made the top plate will be powder coated for durability. I'm just trying to decide on what shape and size I want it to be. I really want the sides of the armboard to be angled to match the sides of the top plate.
