Kappa 5's Review

There is not much written on here about the orginal Kappa 5's speakers, I just want to say I was blown away by the sound's these little Kappa's put out. Of course they do not have the bass of my Kappa 8’s but they do have solid bass that surprised me for a speaker this size and as a matter of fact the best bass I have ever heard from a speaker with a 6.5 inch woofer . This is what surprised me the most about these speakers as I expected the Highs and Midranges to be good to great, with EMITS how could they not.
I'm sure we have all bought speakers and have been let down when we hooked them up and they just did not live up to expectations. Well I want to say this was not the case with these puppies.
I bought these off of epray, they needed the surrounds on the woofers redone, I sent them out to Watkins Stereo because I haven’t worked up the courage to try to replace the surrounds on my own yet. I got them back this week, put them back into the cabinets and connected them. I sat back and was amazed by the sound, I was only going to listen to a couple of songs to test them out, but two hours later I was still sitting there loving everything I threw at them. It is always a great feeling when you are not sure what to expect and are pleasantly surprised.

Some history of me and my Infinty speakers.
Being a long time Infinity owner, my first pair was a pair of Qa's I bought new in the late 70's, I was 17 at the time, and this started my love affair with the brand. It maybe me just looking back over the years, but I know at the time I thought these were some of the best sounding speakers in the store for their price or even for speakers that were twice their price.
I then moved on to a pair of Quantum Jr's, I was disappointed with these at the time , but now in hindsight I realize I did not have an amp with enough power to really bring out their best sound. So I strayed to some Ohm Walsh H's that I was very happy with but they just did not have the open sound stage and the highs that I became used to with the EMIT's in the Infinitys.
So years later I returned to Infinity with a set of brand new Kappa 6's I still have 23 years later. I bought these at the end of the 80's and have owned at least one pair of infinity's ever since as other brands have come and gone. My current collection of Infinity speakers has now grown to include the just purchased Kappa 5's, 2 sets of kappa 6's with a Kappa Center Channel that I use in a surround setup. and my favorites, my Kappa 8's. All but my original Kappa 6's have been purchased in the last year. I will post a picture when I find the time to bring one of the 5's and one of the 6's down next to the 8's for a family portrait.

I've also owned a lot of different speakers over the years including Kiplish, ADS, Axiom, and Bose 301s and 901s. I always seem to come back to the classic infinity's and these Kappa 5's fit into my collection just fine. They are definitely keepers and if anyone else has a chance to pick up a pair I would highly recommend them.
These little Kappa 5’s surprised me as much as my first infinity Qa’s did 33 years ago and for me that is high praise. I am going to go enjoy these little wonders now, would love to hear from anyone else who has them or has listened to them and what their opinion is.
Thanks for taking the time to read my review

I found a pair at the local GW $30 that needed refoaming, BUT one of woofers buzzed aka Bad voice coil. Sure enough when I refoamed it still distorted. I ended up getting a pair of Infinity 4158 woofers off of E Bay, $60 or so with shipping. The Kappa 5 uses the 4179, but allows the use of the 4158 as substitute in the RS 2001 with a Polycell driver and similar crossover. I did have to drill new holes because it had a smaller bolt pattern, albeit the same size woofer. Figure a total investment of $100, still a bargain.

I'm currently running them as a desktop system with Luxman R-113 receiver, 35 wpc but rated for 4 ohms with plenty of headroom (84 wpc dynamic into 4 ohms). It's a touch on the bassy side, but it's still tight and deep. There is completeness to the sound. Highs of course are great with the EMIT. The high crossover, 4500 hz, means the woofer covers the low end and midrange leaving the high end to the EMITS. One strange thing is that mine are black. I suspect it was painted, a shame!
