Marantz 2235B opinions

Hello! I have been bitten by the vintage bug. I purchased a marantz 2022 hooked up to a technics SL1510 turntable, which is a combo I like. To me it is very lush sounding, but certainly not much in terms of detail. Don’t get me wrong, it is very “fun” to listen to.

I am thinking of getting another receiver that represents the vintage marantz sound with more detail, etc. I don’t want to spend 2270 money. I was thinking a 2235b might be the ticket. I would appreciate your thoughts/advice.
Thanks!
Jim

I have had a 2270, 2238b, 2240 and the 2238b definitely had a more lively and accurate sound. At first it had more of a classic 3 martini sound then I set bias and it got pretty darn accurate sounding with just a touch of warmth. Do not get confused that all the b suffixed models are the same, if you want a more detailed sounding classic Marantz look at the generation with 2226B 2238B 2285B 2265B 2252B .

Thank you for the insight. It seems like the early B versions are well liked, Have a bit more power, and I have to admit I like the look of the larger blackout face, which is why I gravitated to the 2235B. The 2230 seems a popular choice, but I think it sounds much like what I have in the 2220. I am interested in a good phono stage and more detail on this next one. Maybe the 2226 etc would fit the bill. Just not what I would prefer ideally in the looks department

Interesting. It seems that I could search for a 2235 or 2235B and not go wrong if the only difference is the add’l tuning meter. It seems tome this unit will sound much different when compared to my “baby” 2220. The sound of the 2220 I can only describe as euphonic. Colored in the best sense of the word. It is almost as though music sounds better than it should. Especially vinyl. Sorry, I can’t even describe it... I love this hobby.

If I'm not mistaken, the 2220 has a cap coupled output. The 2235B does not.

That said, I had a 2235B and sold it to a buddy and he loves it. He also has a 2270 and HAD a 2238B.
