Maxell XLI tapes that possibly aren't?

I was looking at eBay and ran across a lot of six Maxell tapes that are in XLI boxes. However, thanks to the seller's included photos, I don't believe two of the six are XLI. (Making the assumption the leaders are original) The other four are anybody's guess.

He notes that two leaders are orange...that would only make them UD, not even UD-XL, let alone XLI. He then notes four leaders are red. Wellll, those would be the trailing leader, so, short of contacting the seller, there's no way of confirming what they are.

Is my understanding of Maxell lineage correct? The link is here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Maxell-XLI-...-Mixed-Used-/281819333483?hash=item419dbdc36b

Seller's description -

Up for your consideration today is a lot of (6) Maxell XLI 35-180B precision metal reels. 10.5"X.25".

This is a mixed lot of tapes.

He isn't claiming anything except the reels as Maxell.

True enough. Carefully well read, soundmotor.

If I were to make a guess, it would be that whoever buys those will be getting six reels of UD.

Maybe contacting the seller for pics of the tape itself and info on the leaders on each end of each tape. There was no XLI before the EE tapes were released, just the UD and UDXL and earlier than that just UD and UD labeled back coated. Not having any pics of the tape itself makes it hard to tell if it is a bac coated tape or not.

Funny you should mention that. I'm deciding whether they're worth bidding on (I realize there are some AK'ers who would never buy a used tape off the bay; to each his own) but I'm not in the market for UD. I did contact the seller, waiting for a response.

That may be, but my understanding is that UDXL became XLI (same formulation, just a new name and new timing mark color: gray) and what followed that was XLII in the EE formulation (timing mark color was brown)

I could be wrong, though. *shrugs*

Not complete but information none the less.

UD was the better tape over LN
UD Back Coated was an addition to the UD line
UD Back Coated became UDXL
EE tape was released as UDXL II and UDXL was changed to UDXL I

Now to find out the color of the leader markings for each of these tapes so you can tell from the leader instead of the tape because some tapes look the same.
